Former President Donald Trump has suggested that he may have a fighting chance in deep-blue New York. While that would be quite an upset, the backing from an all-time Yankee great certainly helps in the far-reaching endeavor.
New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera told WABC radio host Sid Rosenberg on Friday that he will vote for Trump over President Biden in the November election, saying his “friend” is doing the “right thing for the country.”
Trump was eager to share a clip of Rivera’s endorsement on his social media platform Truth Social — in the excerpt, the Yankees closer, affectionately known as The Sandman, spoke about Trump presenting him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
“Having been given the Freedom of Honor medal from Donald Trump was amazing. I mean it was an amazing moment,” the retired player said. “Receiving that medal was special.”
“I’m very afraid, Mariano, for New York and this world … I’ve got a 19-year-old daughter, she’s gonna turn 20 on Sunday, and a 15-year-old son,” Rosenberg said, “and I think we need President Trump to win or it could be very, very ugly. Do you agree with that?”
“I agree with that,” Rivera replied. “I’m not a politician, I’ll tell you that right now. I’m not going for the right or the left. I’m always going for who is doing the right thing for the country — I believe President Trump is. He’s my friend. I can’t deny that. Before he was the president, he was my friend. And because he is my friend, I’m going to vote for him.”
As for the idea that New York could be in play, Trump has teased possible rallies in New York City at Madison Square Garden and in South Bronx.
“Do I think we have a chance? New York has changed a lot in the last two years,” he told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “We have migrants all over the street. They are living on Madison Avenue. Nobody can believe what’s happened to New York.”
“The people of New York are angry. People that would have never voted for me because I’m a Republican. I mean, they’re Democrats. Their parents were Democrats. They would vote for Democrats. I think they’re going to vote for me. So I think we’re going to give New York a heavy shot,” he continued. “They’re very unhappy in New York. What’s happening? And they’re unhappy with the crime. You take a look at the crime in New York, it’s at record levels.”
Trump went on to say that he thinks New Jersey can be flipped, as well as Virginia, New Mexico and even Minnesota.
“I’m not even sure that everything can’t be flipped,” he insisted.
