Obama judge primed to bail out Dems on SNAP, allow Schumer to continue shutdown

A federal judge in Massachusetts could throw Democrats a lifeline by ordering the Trump administration to tap into emergency funds to pay Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which are set to be suspended on November 1.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani indicated that she will force the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to use the funds to prevent the catastrophe that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his caucus have created with their refusal to approve a continuing resolution to temporarily fund the federal government.

SNAP, which is more commonly known as food stamps, is a vital nutritional assistance program that more than 40 million people rely on. It has never been suspended in the history of the program, but thanks to the Democrats, that could change on Saturday – unless Talwani intervenes.

“Right now, Congress has put money in an emergency fund for an emergency, and it’s hard for me to understand how this isn’t an emergency when there’s no money and a lot of people are needing their SNAP benefits,” the Boston-based judge said during a Thursday hearing in a lawsuit against the Trump administration that was filed by Democrat officials in 25 states seeking to prevent SNAP payments from being halted.

“We’re dealing with the reality that … the benefits aren’t going to be there on November 1,” Talwani said.

One option could be to pay a lesser amount, as she said the government must determine “an equitable way of reducing benefits,” according to The Hill.

“If you don’t have money, you tighten your belt,” the Barack Obama appointee said. “You are not going to make everyone drop dead because it’s a political game someplace.”

“We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures, or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance,” the USDA said in a statement on the agency’s website.

SNAP could be funded immediately if Schumer would allow a handful of his Democrats to join Republicans to approve the continuing resolution.

But he refuses to do so, even while faced with the possibility that millions of their own constituents will be forced to starve, with one congressional Democrat leader admitting, it’s all about “leverage” and if people have to suffer, that’s their problem.

By ordering the tapping of emergency funding, Talwani will remove pressure from Schumer to end the shutdown. Another helping hand from the Democrat-appointed lower court judges who have issued a record-setting blizzard of injunctions and temporary restraining orders to nullify the will of the American people who elected President Donald J. Trump to enact badly needed reforms to correct the damage inflicted on the nation by the Biden administration.

Just as the Kansas City Chiefs can always count on the referees to bail them out, so can the Democrats rely on the small army of unelected judges who are now the front line of the so-called resistance.

The Obama appointee already intervened on behalf of the Democrats when she usurped the power of a coequal branch of government by effectively vetoing a newly passed law preventing the use of Medicaid funding for abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, that was included in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” signed into law by Trump on July 4.

Talwani was later overruled by an appeals court, but that hasn’t stopped her activism from the bench.
