Police say two influencers rejected lifejackets before drowning: ‘They get in the way of their tanning’

Police are claiming two influencers refused pleas to wear life-saving devices because they were too busy tanning and taking selfies.

Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, were living it up on a yacht on the Brazillian coast when they boarded a speedboat back to shore that capsized. Unfortunately, the two women drowned.

Sao Vincente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandra Alfino remarked on the tragic sinking in the Devil’s Throat along the Iguazu River, noting that the two women in particular had rejected pleas to dress themselves in lifejackets.

“Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies,” Alfino said, citing testimony from the captain. “They said that they get in the way of their tanning.”

Local media reported on the incident, the women boarded the speedboat on September 29. Despite it having a maximum capacity of only 5, the captain claimed he was ordered to take the women on. The overcrowding meant that the vessel was unable to navigate the rough waters of the Devil’s Throat. He claims that despite his best efforts to save the lives of the passengers, some of them refused to don safety equipment.

Faria’s body drifted out to sea where it was later recovered by Brazil’s Maritime Firefighters. Amorium’s body was discovered a week later after washing up on Itaquitanduva Beach.

“All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence,” Alfino stated.
