White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki left no wiggle room in insisting that President Biden never spoke to his son Hunter about his overseas business dealings.
Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy penned the president’s spokesperson down at Tuesday’s press briefing.
“A lot of stories about Hunter Biden surfacing this week. So, to ensure the independence of the investigation, would the President support the appointment of a special counsel?” Doocy asked.
Chief among the stories was a Washington Post report that the Chinese company CEFC China Energy and its executives paid $4.8 million to entities controlled by Hunter Biden.
“Well, first, the President has never had a conversation with the Department of Justice about any investigations into any member of his family. He said that during the campaign, and he will continue to abide by that, Psaki replied curtly. “So, I would point you to the Department of Justice for any additional steps they would take. They would make those decisions independently.”
This prompted Doocy to follow up, “Is there any concern that they’re not going to be necessarily seen as being able to make the decisions independently if the White House chief of staff is out saying that the president is confident his son did not break the law?”
“Well, that’s something the President has said and certainly we would echo. But in the same answer to that question, Peter — during an interview this week on ABC, Ron Klain also said the Justice Department is independent and they will make their own decisions.”
The Fox News reporter pressed, “And the President has said that he never spoke to his son about his overseas business dealings. Is that still the case?”
“Yes,” Psaki answered.
In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” George Stephanopoulos asked Biden’s chief of staff if President Biden is “confident” that his son “didn’t break the law.”
“Of course, the president’s confident this his son didn’t break the law,” Klain replied. “But most importantly, as I said, that’s a matter that’s going to be decided by the Justice Department, by the legal process, and something no one at the White House has any involvement in. These are actions by Hunter and his brother. They’re private matters. They don’t involve the president. They certainly are something that no one at the White House is involved in.”
