Punches thrown when brouhaha breaks out at between women’s college soccer teams

Who knew women’s collegiate soccer could be THIS intense?

College rivalries are known for the passion they generate, with fans living and dying for the old alma mater — proverbially speaking. But a first round SEC women’s soccer tournament match  between Ole Miss and LSU saw that emotion play out on the field on Sunday when two players engaged in fisticuffs.

In a match that remained scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, LSU Tigers’ Maya Gordon was defending against Ole Miss Rebels player Ramsey Davis on the far sideline when tempers flared and the two female players began swinging.

From afar, it’s difficult to say who threw the first blow but both women gave a full accounting of themselves as teammates quickly rushed in to break up the fight. One Tigers player, Rammie Noel, had revenge on her mind as she sought out Davis, grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground before others separated the two.

The referee gave all three players a red card, resulting in their ejection from the game.

The contest came down to penalty shots to determine a winner, with the No. 10 Rebels prevailing over the No. 7 Tigers.

The brouhaha made for some interesting comments, including a take from one social media user who gave the women their due by noting how male athletes like left-wing NBA player LeBron James are quick to take a flop.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
