‘SNL’ star Dana Carvey shares heartbreaking posts after son, 32, dies from accidental drug overdose

Comedian Dana Carvey took to social media Thursday to share the heartbreaking news that his eldest son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” the Saturday Night Live alum said in a statement. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, film making, comedy–and pursued all of them passionately.”

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee,” Carvey continued. “Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

“To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers,” the statement concluded, with Carvey and his wife Paula’s names at the bottom.

It’s not clear what drugs were a factor here, but fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45, according to Get Smart About Drugs, which noted that in 2021 nearly 70% of the more than 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the U.S. were a result of the potent synthetic opioid drug that flows across the open southern border in record amounts.

Carvey also shared a photo of his son along with the message: “F*ck the tabloids. This is my boy.”

There was no shortage of well-wishers offering their condolences and words of encouragement in a difficult time — here’s a quick sampling of responses, as seen on X:
