‘So disturbing’: Female teen wrestler sues for sexual assault by trans opponent during match

A Washington State family has sued several government entities over policies they allege allowed their daughter to be sexually assaulted by a male athlete.

The family has alleged that teen female wrestler Kallie Keeler was sexually assaulted by her male opponent, who identifies as “transgender,” during a December high school girls’ wrestling tournament sponsored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The suit says that the male wrestler shoved “his fingers through [Keeler’s] spandex clothing, digitally penetrating her vagina, and holding the position for several seconds.”

“Visibly distressed, [Keeler] shouted to her mother, who was videorecording the match, that the opponent’s fingers are ‘in my c–chie,'” the suit reads.

The defendants include the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal, the Puyallup School District, and several school employees.

According to the family’s attorneys with the Alliance Defending Freedom ADF), state officials directed Keeler to fight an opponent but never told her the opponent was a male. Then, following the match, they waited 53 days before taking the family’s sexual assault complaint to law enforcement.

Making matters worse, district officials said that if Keeler wanted to keep competing, she’d have to endure more fights with males.

“A 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted because of political cowardice,” ADF Senior Counsel Kate Anderson said in a statement. “Washington state officials insist on pushing gender ideology at all costs—even at the expense of girls’ safety and privacy. Our client’s story is proof of the grave harms caused by lying about biology.”

“This must end—otherwise, girls will continue getting hurt and violated. We are urging the court to require state officials to change their policy to ensure that girls’ privacy and safety are protected when they compete in the sports they love. No girl should have to unknowingly wrestle a boy. And at a minimum, parents must be notified before their daughters are matched against male opponents,” she added.

According to Fox News, the ADF’s argument centers around Title IX. Specifically, they argue in the suit that what happened to Keeler constitutes sex discrimination under Title IX because she was denied a fair and safe athletic opportunity.

They also argue that she faced a hostile education environment because school officials ignored her complaint, that school officials violated parental rights because her mother wasn’t told or given the option to opt her out, and that school officials exposed her to danger through their policies and inaction.

The Department of Education is reportedly also investigating the matter.

“The allegations in this case are sickening—that a female athlete was not only unknowingly forced to compete against a male in a girls-only division placing her at increased risk for sexual assault, but that her report of sexual assault during the match was ignored by Puyallup School District for months,” Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said in February.

“While the District may prioritize ideological agendas over the safety and dignity of its students, the Trump Administration will not tolerate such conduct. We will continue to vigorously enforce Title IX to ensure that women and girls have safe, equal access to educational programs and opportunities, and that allegations of sexual assault are addressed promptly and fully,” she added.
