House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) made it clear that GOP Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will not be getting any support from across the political aisle.
While Johnson was renominated for Speaker in a voice vote by House Republicans last month, he still faces election on the House floor where Republicans will hold a slim majority come January. And while President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his support for Johnson who has managed to win over some of his GOP detractors, he has very little wiggle room.
And Jeffries warned that there would be no Democrats to throw him a lifeline in the Jan. 3 Speaker vote.
“I can say with a relatively high degree of confidence that no Democratic votes will be forthcoming for any Republican Speaker candidate on Jan. 3,” the New York lawmaker told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday.

“In terms of my own nomination,” Jeffries said, “I’m just trying hard to get to 215.”
Asked about how he will handle a relationship with the incoming administration and soon-to-be 47th President Donald Trump, Jeffries claimed he would be looking to find roads to agreement.
“Democrats have consistently made clear that we are ready, willing, and able, to find bipartisan common ground with the incoming administration on any issue,” he said.
“We are prepared to find common ground with the incoming administration on any issue, particularly as it relates to the most decisive ones to emerge from this election, which, in our view, is to deal with the high cost of living,” Jeffries added.
He told reporters he has not spoken with Trump since the election but believes they will be speaking “in the next few weeks.”
Johnson will “almost certainly need to have buy-in from Jeffries on critical legislation next year,” Fox News noted.
“With several Republicans expected to leave the House for Trump administration roles, the likely margin for at least the first few months in Congress will be 217-215 – meaning Republicans must vote in lock-step to pass any bills without Democratic support,” the outlet added.
Back in May, there was an effort by some Republicans to boot Johnson but Democrats crossed the aisle to rescue him with the final tally being 359 to 43, as only 10 Republicans and 33 Democrats voted against him.
