Too much therapy is causing misery in children, mental health experts are the ‘arsonists’, author warns

“Nobody has gotten more therapy than the rising generation,” according to author Abigail Shrier.

“No one’s had more psych meds,” Shrier told Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade. “No one’s had more talk about feelings… No one has had more therapeutic parenting and therapeutic intervention in school, social-emotional learning, and you know what? It’s not doing them any good.”

“In fact,” she said, “I would argue it’s counterproductive. It’s making them worse.”

Shrier appeared on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” to discuss her new book, “Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up.”

Kids today have more access to therapy, she said, but the well-intentioned therapists aren’t helping.

“The mental health experts are claiming, ‘Oh, we’re just the firemen. We’re just responding to the fire,'” Shrier told Kilmeade.

“Not true,” she stated. “They’re the arsonists, and here’s why.”

“We’ve been doing preventive mental health care, flooding these kids with therapeutic techniques and methods and mindfulness techniques, wellness, for a generation now,” she explained. “No one has gotten more mental health intervention. No one’s got more diagnoses. 42% of them have a mental health diagnosis. They’ve been in treatment now for a generation, and you know what? The self-focused, the feelings focus, the dependence on mental health experts that parents have to raise their kids — It’s not helping.”

Kids who are subjected to a regimen of unnecessary mental health treatment are less independent and, as such, are less likely to take risks, Shrier said. They are robbed of the feelings of empowerment.

“Efficacy. Feeling like, I can do this. I can figure it out. I can take a risk,” she explained. “They’re so afraid of trauma. They think they can’t. They think they’ve been bullied. They think they’ve been traumatized.”

“These kids think they have PTSD if they get dumped,” she stated.

They are so riddled with fear and self-doubt, they even have “menu anxiety.”

“We have let these kids become so frantic and so worried, and then we bring in these mental health experts… supposedly as the solution,” Shrier said. “They’re not the solution. They are the worry-makers, and they’re creating the problem.”

In news that should surprise no one, research indicates that the parents’ political proclivities have an impact on their children’s mental well-being.

While teen girls “do the worst in terms of mental health, in terms of anxiety and depression,” Shrier said, the studies indicate that “teen boys from liberal families have worse mental health in terms of anxiety and depression than teen girls from conservative families.”

Though therapy and psychiatric medication are necessary for some children, Shrier urged parents to be aware of the potential side effects.

“What I want parents to know is not that therapy is never appropriate, not that psych meds are never appropriate. …” she said. “But every medical intervention, every drug – even Tylenol – comes with risk, and therapy does too.”

On X, a certain quirky billionaire and father of 11 children boasted that he’s never taken to a psychiatrist’s proverbial couch.

“Put ‘Never Went to Therapy’ on my gravestone,” Elon Musk declared.
