Trump calls for arrest of Politico reporters after SCOTUS leak probe comes up empty

The monthslong Supreme Court investigation into who was responsible for leaking a draft opinion in the case that would end with the overturning of abortion rights landmark Roe v. Wade came up empty, prompting a strong response from former President Donald J. Trump.

On Thursday, the nation’s highest court announced that it was unable to identify the culprit behind the passing of the document to the Politico reporters who published it last May, triggering a furious response from Democrats and their violent shock troops who engaged in a campaign to harass and intimidate the conservative SCOTUS judges.

Trump reacted to the disappointing news by calling for the drastic measure of arresting the journalists and editor who were given the information, implying that such pressure would provide motivation for them to spill the beans on the leaker.

“Arrest the reporter, publisher, editor – you’ll get your answer fast. Stop playing games and wasting time!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The Supreme Court has just announced it is not able to find out, even with the help of our ‘crack’ FBI, who the leaker was on the R v Wade scandal. They’ll never find out, & it’s important that they do. So, go to the reporter & ask him/her who it was. If not given the answer, put whoever in jail until the answer is given,” Trump also wrote on the platform. “You might add the publisher and editor to the list. Stop playing games, this leaking cannot be allowed to happen. It won’t take long before the name of this slime is revealed!”

According to a report on the results of the investigation by Gail Curley, the marshal of the Supreme Court who was directed by Chief Justice John Roberts to get to the bottom of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization draft opinion after it was published by Politico, the SCOTUS sleuth could not conclusively pinpoint the leaker.

“In following up on all available leads … the Marshal’s team performed additional forensic analysis and conducted multiple follow-up interviews of certain employees,” the court said. “But the team has to date been unable to identify a person responsible by a preponderance of the evidence.”

“While investigators and the Court’s IT experts cannot absolutely rule out a hack, the evidence to date reveals no suggestion of improper outside access,” the report said. “After examining the Court’s computer devices, networks, printers, and available call and text logs, investigators have found no forensic evidence indicating who disclosed the draft opinion.”

It isn’t the first time that Trump has suggested that the reporters should be arrested for what was described by the Supreme Court as “one of the worst betrayals of trust in its history” as well as “a grave assault on the judicial process.”

At an October rally in Texas, Trump used his typically colorful language when he told attendees that the Politico reporters should be locked up if they didn’t squeal on the leaker and suggested that the idea that they could end up being the “bride of another prisoner” would be a powerful incentive to come clean.

“You know in this country they leak all over the place – even on the Supreme Court,’ he said. “By the way, you have to find the leaker.”

“You take the writer and or the publisher of the paper – a certain paper that you know – and you say ‘who is the leaker?’ national security, and they say ‘we’re not going to tell you,’ and they say, ok, you’re going to jail.”

“And when this person realizes they are going to be the bride of another prisoner very shortly, he will say ‘I’d very much like to tell you exactly who that leaker was. It was Bill Jones, I swear he’s the leaker!’” Trump said.

‘They don’t want to do that. But that’s the only way,” he added.

While there are already calls by GOP lawmakers and pundits for further investigation, it is probably likely that the identity of the leaker will remain a mystery absent sustained pressure from the mainstream media.
