The president’s push to remove obstacles to renovations of the Trump Kennedy Center was met with leftist speculation and further threats of legal action.
Records have long shown that, when it comes to President Donald Trump, everything is a partisan issue to his detractors. Now, after melting down over the decision to add his name to the title of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, teeth gnashed anew over his proposal to shutter its doors for two years to complete renovations.
Taking to Truth Social on Sunday, the chief executive and chairman of the center announced that he would be seeking board approval for the shutdown beginning on Independence Day.
“After a one year review of The Trump Kennedy Center, that has taken place with Contractors, Musical Experts, Art Institutions, and other Advisors and Consultants, deciding between either Construction with Closure and Re-Opening or, Partial Construction while continuing Entertainment Operations through a much longer period of time, working in and around the Performances,” wrote Trump, “I have determined that The Trump Kennedy Center, if temporarily closed for Construction, Revitalizations, and Complete Rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind, anywhere in the World.”
“In other words, if we don’t close, the quality of Construction will not be nearly as good, and the time to completion, because of interruptions with Audiences from the many Events using the Facility, will be much longer,” he added. “The temporary closure will produce a much faster and higher quality result!”
“This important decision, based on input from many Highly Respected Experts, will take a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center, one that has been in bad condition, both financially and structurally for many years, and turn it into a World Class Bastion of Arts, Music, and Entertainment,” argued the president.
Among those critical of the president and the name change of the center, Maria Shriver, niece to President John F. Kennedy, took to social media to suggest the decision to temporarily close the center was brought on by leftist entertainers canceling scheduled performances.
“Translation: It has been brought to my attention that due to the name change (but nobody’s telling me it’s due to the name change), but it’s been brought to my attention that entertainers are canceling left and right, and I have determined that since the name change no one wants to perform there any longer,” read her post in an attempt at parody.
“I’ve determined that due to this change in schedule, it’s best for me to close this center down and rebuild a new center that will bear my name, which will surely get everybody to stop talking about the fact that everybody’s canceling… right?” concluded Shriver.

Meanwhile, Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty (D), a former board member of the center, who had filed suit against the administration over the name change, was up in arms over how the closure would impact those with contracts with the center.
“What happens to them? Has Trump or his handpicked Board given any consideration to their livelihoods or futures? This is exactly why congressional oversight is so important,” said the congresswoman. “And let’s be clear: remodeling the premises won’t restore the Kennedy Center to what it was. But a return to artistic independence will. America’s artists are rejecting this attempted takeover, and it is resounding. The administration knows it, and they’re scrambling for cover.”
Beatty’s representation, Democracy Defenders Action, and the Washington Litigation Group issued their own statement that read, “Donald Trump’s recent announcement that he will be closing the Center for two years raises serious questions about whether his purpose isn’t to renovate but to shut the Center down to avoid further embarrassment. This will add further injury to the damage already done. We already have court proceedings pending, and we will be considering all legal remedies to address this new and concerning development.”
Contrasting the outrage, Trump Kennedy Center acting President and Executive Director Richard Grenell voiced support for the move on X, “I am grateful for President Trump’s visionary leadership. I am also grateful to Congress for appropriating an historic $275M to finally address decades of deferred maintenance and repairs at the Trump Kennedy Center.”
“Our goal has always been to not only save and permanently preserve the Center, but to make it the finest Arts Institution in the world,” he went on, stating it “just makes sense” to temporarily shutter operations for the renovations.
