Former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said Tuesday that the sanctions President Biden unveiled earlier in the day against Moscow in response to what he called “the beginning of a Russian invasion” of Ukraine not only don’t work, but that they ultimately hurt the American people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Monday he will send Russian forces into eastern Ukraine’s two breakaway regions — Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic — to “perform peacekeeping functions,” and Biden responded with a number of moves, including sanctions against two large Russian financial institutions, freezing their assets in U.S. and European financial systems, He also declared that “after consultations overnight with Germany, Russia’s Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline will not become operational.”

Fox News host Tucker Carlson opened Tuesday’s episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” with a focus on events in Ukraine, which he refers to as a regional “border dispute,” and expressed concern that the U.S. is moving “closer to some kind of conflict with Russia, a conflict that could easily spin out of control given that the people running us have no fine motor skills.” But Carlson drew the most scorn from critics by declaring that Democrats in Washington have told the American people it their “patriotic duty to hate Vladimir Putin,” before pointing out that Putin is not responsible for any number of problems facing America, from the woke agenda to pandemic lockdowns.

With a focus on the impact this will have on the American people, Carlson featured Gabbard, who ran in the 2020 Democratic primary to be the party’s presidential nominee, as a guest and asked if there was something he was missing.

“No, I don’t think you are missing anything. The reality is that these sanctions don’t work, whether they were put in before or now or later. The sanctions don’t work,” Gabbard replied. “What we do know is they will increase suffering and hardship for the American people, and this is the whole problem with the Biden Administration. They are so focused on how do we punish Putin that they don’t care and are not focused on what is actually in the best interest of the American people.”

“So when Biden stands there and looks directly into the camera and says defending freedom will cost us, what he really should be saying is, looking directly into the American people’s eyes and saying, ‘This will cost you.’ Because the sanctions are not going to cost him or Kamala Harris or the power elite in this country free, even the power elite in Russia.” she continued. “It is the people who will suffer. The American people, the Russian people. People here at home working hard every single day facing those drastically increasing prices at the gas pump, facing increasing cost of the supermarket, impacting our supply chain. The hardships that people are dealing with everyday now with Biden’s sanctions plan, we’re only going to see that continue to get worse.”

Gabbard also warned that it doesn’t end with Biden’s actions, warning that Russia will respond.

“[Putin] will respond and it’s likely he will retaliate using cyberattacks on our financial systems and communication systems, on our basic infrastructure. Biden will then be forced to respond, Putin will then be forced to respond. So we end up with this endless tit-for-tat that leads us where, to this looming threat and likelihood of this thing going nuclear,” she said.

On the prospect of a nuclear exchange, Gabbard reminded Carlson the power elite “will go hide in their bunkers. They’ll have their shelter, food, water and everything they need. You and I and the American people, we will be left out to deal with the consequences.”

“And yet, we are doing this for principle,” Carlson said, heavy on the sarcasm. “The people in charge, who don’t care at all about our founding documents, who violate their spirit and letter everyday are telling us there are essential American principles at stake.”

“Therein lies the hypocrisy,” Gabbard replied. “They’re saying we’re doing this in defense of freedom and the defense of democracy, but these are the very same people that are working to undermine our own freedom and our own democracy right here at home. I have a hard time seeing how they actually say these things with a straight face to the American people when they clearly don’t care about these principles right here at home. They don’t care about defending them and they don’t care about the well-being of the American people.”

A little reported fact is that Russia is not only one of the world’s largest oil producers, but that they are America’s third largest supplier at 595,000 barrels per day, which accounts for 7% of U.S. crude oil imports in late 2021.

Yet, one of Biden’s first acts as president was to shut down the Keystone XL Pipeline expansion, and gas prices have been rising ever since and will certainly get worse.

“Replacing that oil will put additional upward pressure on global oil prices, virtually assuring that oil will exceed $100/bbl if the situation further escalates,” Forbes reported.

Which is not to say that the media will not try to run interference for Biden and his administration, as seen Tuesday when CBS News blamed a number ongoing problems that have beset the president for the better part of the last year on the Ukraine crisis.

“The U.S. economy has been hit with increased gas prices, inflation, and supply-chain issues due to the Ukraine crisis,” CBS News declared in a tweet Tuesday.
