Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr blames for-profit media for the nation’s toxic political climate and believes it’s dividing Americans into tribalistic “camps.”
“Media for profit didn’t use to be a thing,” Kerr said on the former ESPN personality “Hey Mayne” podcast. “I don’t know how long ago this really started, but in my mind, media for profit these days is so bad.”
As a nine-time NBA champion, Kerr has often come under fire for his anti-Trump and pro-gun control stances and for his silence on the human rights abuses inflicted upon the Chinese people by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The NBA has invested roughly $10 billion in China, and even as Hong Kong citizens stormed the streets in 2019 to protest the CCP’s oppression, Kerr remained neutral.
“What I’ve found is that it’s easy to speak on issues that I’m passionate about and that I feel like I’m well-versed on, and I’ve found that it makes the most sense to stick to topics that fall in that category,” he said. “I’m just trying to learn just like everybody else.”
It is not immediately clear whether Kerr has thoughts about the current uprising in China, as citizens from across the country united against the CCP’s tyrannical “Zero COVID” policies. The last time Kerr specifically mentioned China in a tweet was in 2013, and then it was to note a “tobogganing” mishap along the Great Wall.

But on the media’s relentless pursuit of the almighty dollar, Kerr has thoughts.
“It’s so negative,” Kerr stated. “Because it pulls people into those camps and reinforces the negative stereotypes of the other side; and meanwhile, these media companies are just churning out the dollars by fomenting anger and distrust. And it’s like, ‘this is really not a good recipe for a healthy country.'”
Online, Kerr’s remarks are being met with a healthy dose of skepticism.
“@SteveKerr still waiting for you to speak out in the atrocities in China???” one user tweeted.
“Steve Kerr is a communist stooge,” wrote another.

Podcaster and journalist Stephen L. Miller praised the CCP for allowing the coach to speak at all.
“I see China has once again given Steve Kerr permission to speak out on socio-political topics happening around the world,” he tweeted.
“Well I mean, who better than a China owned NBA coach to speak on socio-political topics gripping the world!” replied a fourth user sarcastically. “I’m on the edge of my seat as are all Americans.”

The hypocrisy was almost too much for some Twitter users to bear.
“But he’s perfectly fine collecting paychecks backed by a country that has basically enslaved their entire population,” one user tweeted.
“Has he said a single word about it or the NBA? Of course not,” the user noted. “What a little hypocritical b**ch.”
