House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) looks and sounds worried as he admits that it will only take five Republicans to oust him, while many Republicans fume that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is an “a**hole.”

The infighting as Republicans spar over vacating McCarthy from his seat is reaching a fever pitch. Despite McCarthy claiming he has more support than Gaetz in the House, rumor has it the Florida conservative already has at least seven Republicans who will vote to remove him as speaker. McCarthy’s term as speaker may come to an abrupt end sooner than later if that is true.
“Do you need [Democrats] help to remain in leadership?” a reporter asked McCarthy at a press gaggle.
“No. If five Republicans go with Democrats, then I’m out,” he stated.
“Sounds likely,” the reporter responded.
“Probably so,” McCarthy admitted.

There is no indication that Democrats have any desire to save McCarthy from his ouster.
“We’re not voting in any way that would help save Speaker McCarthy,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) stated, according to the Daily Mail. “Nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy, and why should they?”
The majority of Republicans are not happy with Gaetz’s historic move. It’s been over 100 years since someone tried to unseat a speaker.
“The consensus is that Matt Gaetz is an a**hole,” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-N.Y.) told reporters after a meeting in McCarthy’s office, according to the Daily Mail.

“It has everything to do with Matt Gaetz putting Matt Gaetz above the United States,” Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisc.) also told reporters according to the outlet. “The only word I can describe for [him] is either he’s either a fool or a liar.”
“Gaetz is using the American people, as pawns in his narcissistic game of charades, and I think we’ve had enough,” Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) declared, according to the Daily Mail.
Others didn’t mince words concerning Gaetz either.
“The motion to vacate put forth yesterday is nothing more than a tantrum aimed at personal and political gain,” Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) remarked.
“He is a diabolical saboteur who has been single-mindedly focused on destabilizing the Republican majority for nine months,” Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) charged.
Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-N.Y.) called Gaetz’s purported coup “some sort of weird, pseudo psycho political fetish that needs to come to an end.”

He’s far from alone in that sentiment.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) commented on the impasse, telling reporters that Gaetz admitted to her “that there is no plan.”
“There’s no one that has stepped forward to run. There’s no one that is coming out saying I’ll be speaker and rallying support within the conference,” Greene contended.

“We have a senile, unpopular Democrat president in the White House. Voters are rightfully pointing to Democrats as responsible for an unprecedented border crisis, persistent inflation, and rampant crime in every major city in America,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) railed.
“But instead of pointing out those failures and presenting a united front to address real problems facing our country, Republicans are about to spend another week – maybe more – pointlessly fighting with each other. This is stupid,” he proclaimed.

“It’s a waste of time,” Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) commented to Fox News host Neil Cavuto on Monday. “The only way that Matt Gaetz could be successful at a motion to vacate to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker is if more than 200 Democrats join with him.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who has repeatedly blasted GOP leadership, is also against the removal of McCarthy as speaker.
“From my perspective, the House has been functioning better, more transparently, and more conservatively, with Speaker McCarthy than it did with Speaker Boehner or Speaker Ryan,” Massie said on X. “We have issues, but replacing Speaker McCarthy won’t magically fix them. In fact, it could get worse.”
