U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confirmed that she is engaged after being seen clearly wearing a ring she flaunted during a lengthy Instagram Live video.
In a more than one-hour message on Instagram Thursday night, the New York Democrat focused on the “radicalized” Supreme Court and the leaked draft opinion that could see the overturning of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. She also made a head-scratching reference to Jesus and a Bible story about a woman cheating on her husband.
“It’s been a minute since we’ve been able to catch up,” she told her followers, apologizing for being “MIA” and mentioning a “little bit of a health issue that kind of had me sidelined.”

She soon launched her attack on the Supreme Court decision, lambasting conservatives and those opposed to unrestricted abortions in the nation. During her talk, an engagement ring could clearly be seen displayed on her right hand as she gestured repeatedly during the hour.
Though she never addressed the rock, she did take to Twitter later to confirm she is engaged in response to a tweet by Business Insider’s Eliza Relman.
“It’s true! Thank you all for the well wishes,” she tweeted.

Ocasio-Cortez confirmed to the outlet that she is engaged to her longtime partner Riley Roberts whom she met when the two were students at Boston University.
“We got engaged last month in my family’s hometown in Puerto Rico,” she reportedly wrote, according to Insider, though the tweet appears to have been since deleted. “No future details yet, we’re taking some space to savor this time before diving into planning.”
Relman noted that her “campaign used the opportunity to send out a fundraising email that also promoted Texas progressive Jessica Cisneros’ upcoming primary runoff against Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.”

Comedian Francesca Fiorentini joked in a tweet that the 32-year-old lawmaker’s ring must be “made of tinfoil otherwise the right’s gonna flip.”
“Close! It’s zero emission and recycled gold,” Ocasio-Cortez replied.

During her Instagram Live video Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez railed against the conservatives on the Supreme Court and used a meandering story-telling of a Bible account about Jesus and the religious Pharisees whom she compared to those in positions of power today who are “taking away autonomy from women.”
“It is so awful that we are in this moment,” she said. “I really think that one of the most effective things we can do is to help people whose rights are being attacked right now.
“The Supreme Court has long been radicalized and you have basically several people who have lied, and it certainly feels like they absolutely misled people in their statements in order to get on the Supreme Court,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed.
“Several Justices were appointed by a man who facilitated in an insurrection against the United States Government and that is clearly being reflected in the decisions coming out from the court,” she continued, adding that anyone living in a “place that is outlawing abortion” is “welcome in New York and we will do what we can.”
“As someone who grew up in a Christian household I’ve been thinking a lot about a parable of Christ and if you are would indulge me for those who may not be Christian and familiar with the story… it’s a story that is relevant in general,” she went on, beginning her retelling of the New Testament Bible story about the woman ‘caught in the act of adultery’ who is dragged before Jesus by the religious leaders of the day in an attempt to get him to condemn her.
“Let’s be really clear about the power dynamic here when you have several powerful people doing this. It frankly really blurs the lines of consent because what choice would she have when they hold so much power?” AOC continued, saying there is a “deeper meaning” to the story following the response from Jesus.
“Christ does not condemn her. The people who did something wrong there were those who were abusing her power. There are a lot of those kinds of types around today, trying to abuse women and take their autonomy away. All in the name of a book that they haven’t really studied that closely,” she said, clearly making the connections to those she sees as abusing power today.
Claiming that her “faith has nothing to do with my public service,” Ocasio-Cortez contended that the “vast majority of Americans believe in a person’s right to choose.”
