AZ governor erects shipping container border wall as term ends, Katie Hobbs mulls tearing it down

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey may be leaving office in a few weeks but that hasn’t deterred him one bit from protecting his state’s border, with hundreds of shipping containers topped by razor wire being used as a wall to keep illegal immigrants and drug smugglers out, a project that doesn’t sit well with his successor, Democrat Katie Hobbs who will move into his office on January 5.

Despite the objections of the Biden regime which has decried the innovative border control project as illegal and accused the state of trespassing on federal land, Ducey has remained defiant as workers have continued to work on erecting the improvised barriers despite the disruptive actions of protesters, angering critics and making the hot button issue a top matter that Hobbs will need to address soon after her inauguration.

Hobbs, who previously suggested that the shipping containers could be repurposed as affordable housing units said that she is “looking at all the options,” telling an interviewer from Phoenix’s PBS station KAET “I don’t know how much it will cost to remove the containers and what the cost will be.”

Last month, Hobbs said she’d remove the containers if elected, “These kinds of things are just political stunts that are not really solving issues at the border.”

Frustrated by President Joe Biden’s inaction on the porous border and inability to stem the tide of deadly fentanyl into the state, Ducey was forced to issue an executive order for the filling of gaps in the border wall near Yuma in August.

“Arizona has had enough,” Ducey said in a statement. “We can’t wait any longer. The Biden administration’s lack of urgency on border security is a dereliction of duty. For the last two years, Arizona has made every attempt to work with Washington to address the crisis on our border. Time and time again we’ve stepped in to clean up their mess. Arizonans can’t wait any longer for the federal government to deliver on their delayed promises.”

The governor has frequently taken to Twitter to blast Biden as well as tout the necessity for his Border Barrier Mission, with one October post showing an image of drugs that had been confiscated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

“Arizona is going to do the job that Joe Biden refuses to do – secure the border in any way we can,” Ducey said after the state recently filed suit against the federal government. “We’re not backing down.”

“Our border communities are being used as the entryway to the United States, overwhelming law enforcement, hospitals, nonprofits and residents,” Ducey said in his August statement. “It’s our responsibility to protect our citizens and law enforcement from this unprecedented crisis. With the resources and manpower in the right places, our Border Patrol and law enforcement will be better equipped to do their jobs well and prevent cartels from exploiting our communities. That’s exactly what our barrier mission will do.”

“The shipping containers will reach about 22-feet high. The state-owned, 8,800-pound, 9-by-40-feet containers will be linked together and welded shut. The panels of the border wall constructed during the Trump administration are 30-feet high,” Ducey said, describing the project.

As a result of her gubernatorial win against Republican opponent Kari Lake who championed America first policies, particularly border control, Hobbs is set to enter office as controversy swirls about the legitimacy of the election which many are suspicious of, making her task of governing all the more difficult, especially when it comes to contentious issues like immigration with her political party being on record in its support of open borders.

Whether or not Hobbs allows Ducey’s border wall to stand remains to be seen but Arizonans who are concerned with the ongoing flood of illegal aliens, drugs and the proliferation of crime will continue to suffer now that Democrats have gained control of the levers of political power.
