Camera shows DoorDash driver appear to spray food with pepper spray after customer gasps and chokes

A DoorDash deliverer has been accused of tampering with a couple’s food, and the whole thing was reportedly caught on video.

Ordering delivery has become so common in the United States that it has almost replaced dine-in as the standard restaurant experience. But what happens when the people you’re paying to deliver your meal can’t be trusted? One couple in Indiana found out the hard way that you should always double-check your delivery before chowing down.

Doorbell footage shows a purple-haired delivery person set down a bag on December 7, before taking a picture of it. After verifying the delivery, the person appears to spray the bag with an unidentified substance believed to be pepper-spray.

Mark Cardin’s wife began eating her Arby’s order when it quickly became apparent that something was desperately wrong.

“I noticed my wife had started eating and she started choking and gasping, and after she had a couple of bites of her food, she actually threw up,” Cardin told 14 News.

“I had a look at the bag and seen that there was some kind of spray or something,” he added. “The bag had been tampered with. So I pulled up my doorbell camera and seen that the lady who dropped the food off had actually tampered with it on purpose for some reason.”

“It’s horrific. We assume it’s pepper spray, that’s more than likely what it is, but now in this day and age, it could’ve been anything. It could’ve been rat poison, it could’ve been fentanyl. I mean, my wife could’ve been dead,” the man said.

No charges have been filed, though Cardin reported that he contacted both DoorDash and the police.

“I definitely want to see her prosecuted,” he insisted, implying that he believes the company did not take his complaint seriously despite refunding his money for the inedible order.

“The Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating, and a possible charge could be consumer product tampering, a level 6 felony,” 14 News reported. “They say if it resulted in harm, it would be a level 5 felony.”

“We live in a terrible world right now,” Cardin said. “Horrific. People are mean for no reason. There was no reason to do what she done.”

“I would say to anybody, if you order food on any kind of delivery service, make sure you have a doorbell,” he warned. “This is making me second guess ever ordering food from anywhere ever again.”
