‘CANADA IS A COUNTRY!’ Canadians rage over 51st state merch on Amazon

The availability of maple MAGA merchandise from the world’s largest e-retailer left some Canadians in a tizzy over the alleged “threat to our autonomy and identity.”

Amid President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs to negotiate on trade and national security, the commander-in-chief repeatedly referenced the idea of Canada joining the union as the 51st state. Between dispelling concerns about the left-leaning population and referring to now-former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as governor, the marketability of Trump’s proposal inspired entrepreneurs and subsequently enraged Canadians into demanding that Amazon remove the products.

“Urge Amazon to Discontinue Selling ‘Canada, 51st State’ Merchandise,” read the banner of a Change.org petition that had garnered nearly 70,000 signatures since February.

“More than just a personal affront,” stated Ontario petitioner Sue Williams-Dunn, “this issue sparks nationwide indignation. While some may argue these products are harmless, even comedic, they disregard and belittle the sustained economic terrorism Canada has been withstanding. This is not a joke to us. It’s a threat to our autonomy and identity as Canadians.”

Examples of the merchandise included a depiction of Trump in a red hat adorned with a maple leaf and the message “Make Canada The 51st State,” while others said “Maple syrup and freedom, 51 states strong,” and “Make Canada Great Again.”

“I have personally chosen to boycott Amazon as long as they are selling anti-Canadian merchandise on their Canadian site,” read one comment on the petition, while another expressed, “Canada as the US’s 51st state is offensive, threatening, ridiculous and no laughing matter. Stop selling merch with the phrase on it!”

“Boycott Amazon, I don’t shop there anymore! They sell hats, flags and T shirts that support Canada becoming the 51st state! Amazon needs to take the items down, Canada is not for sale, this really makes me mad!” asserted a comment on X that included examples of the merchandise.

Williams-Dunn also said, “As citizens of Canada, a proudly sovereign nation, we feel a profound sense of betrayal by the US President to try to force us to become the 51st State (not part of his campaign/mandate) through submission not permission. The continuous efforts made by President Trump to annex our beloved country through economic warfare, to convert us into the 51st state of America, is a threat we face daily and have not agree to.”

Of course, some Canadians, including many in the government of the Great White North, have demonstrated confusion on how freedom worked. While protests against draconian mandates under COVID by the Freedom Convoy resulted in bank accounts being frozen, Hamas sympathizers blocking access to a Jewish community were hand-delivered coffee from police officers.

The boycott against the merchandise was one of several forms of protest employed by outraged Canadians, as others vowed to stop visiting the United States, with some going so far as to shift travel plans from Florida to Cuba.

Meanwhile, as some fumed about the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and it was suggested that the GOP leader was behind a “trade war,” reminders about the extent to which Canada imposed tariffs on American goods abounded.

Not everyone was as salty as the boycotters as others found great amusement concerning both the merchandise and the wailing with one post on X stating, “Now that’s funny as hell — Canucks are very upset that Amazon is selling merchandise with the ’51st State’ on it. Canada screams STOP THAT! But I bet there are Canadians that buy that stuff!”
