CNN ‘reality check’ reveals Trump more popular than ever, country on right track

Despite what Democrats would have you believe, President Donald Trump is more popular than ever.

Even CNN has to admit it, as polling compiled by network analyst Harry Enten delivered a “reality check” for viewers by showing Trump with a higher favorability rating than he ever enjoyed during his first term in office.

“I think sometimes it’s important to do a little bit of reality check and take a little different spin at the numbers,” Enten said during a CNN segment as he looked at the number of Americans who believe the country is on the right track.

“I’m going to do that right here because all we talk about is how unpopular Donald Trump is,” the analyst continued.“But in reality, he’s basically more popular than he was at any point in term number one and more popular than he was when he won the election back in November of 2024.”

What are we talking about? His net favorable rating right now comes in at minus seven points; in March of 2017, he was at minus 10 points,” Enten explained as he pointed out the figures.

“So when you compare Trump against himself, he’s actually closer to the apex than he is to the bottom of the trough,” he added. “And of course, that’s so important because Donald Trump, historically speaking, has had his numbers underestimated.”

“So I think it’s very important to compare him to himself to understand he’s actually more popular now than he was when he won or certainly where he was at this point back in his first term,” Enten continued.

He pointed to a recent Marist poll that showed 45% of those surveyed believe America is headed in the right direction. This number is Marist’s second-highest figure recorded since 2009. Likewise, an NBC News survey found that 44% of respondents have this view – the highest level the poll recorded since 2004.

“The bottom line is, the percentage of Americans who say we’re on the right track is through the roof,” Enten said.

“And if you were to compare it to when presidents have historically been re-elected, of course, Trump is not constitutionally eligible to run for re-election, but I think it sort of puts it in perspective, 42% of the country says the country is on the right track when the incumbent party is re-elected,” the CNN analyst added.

Enten pointed out the change since the election as “only about 27% to 28% of the country said the country was on the right track” when Trump defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The bottom line is, right now, a much higher percentage of the country says we’re on the right track,” he explained, adding that “the generic congressional ballot” in polls for the 2026 midterm elections “looks a heck of a lot more like when Republicans win than when Democrats win.”
