Dem congressman from Maine flips to support gun control – rewarded with fundraising campaign

After previously opposing gun control legislation, Democratic Congressman Jared Golden (Maine) has flipped on the issue following the mass shooting in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, that resulted in 18 people being killed.

An Army reservist with a history of mental illness reportedly opened fire Wednesday at a bowling alley and a restaurant. In addition to those killed, another 13 were injured — the alleged shooter, Robert Card, remains at large.

The gun control crowd wasted no time responding to what equates to a mental health crisis in America to call for disarming law-abiding people. Golden took part in a news conference in Lewiston and labeled his previous opposition to gun control legislation a “failure” while incorrectly calling the AR-15 style rifle used in the shooting a “weapon of war.”

“I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war like the assault rifle he used to carry out this crime,” the Democrat announced. “The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine.”

“For the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have left in Congress,” he added.

Golden spoke out against a gun control bill being pushed by the Democratic Party in 2022 following mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. In addition to raising the age limit to purchase semi-automatic weapons, the bill would have limited the sale of magazines to no more than 15 rounds.

“Now is not a time for bills we all know will fail. Congress should not simply focus on ‘doing something’ but rather on doing something of substance that can pass into law and will advance the effort to prevent those with violent intent from obtaining or possessing weapons,” he said at the time, according to the Associated Press.

Golden was clear at the time that kneejerk reactions to shootings do not solve the problem, but now that his constituency has dealt with a mass shooter he has suddenly changed his tune.

His efforts Thursday were quickly rewarded when the gun-grabbers in the party initiated a fundraising campaign on his behalf.

U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, the Marxist-inspired Gen Z Democrat from Florida tweeted, “Jared is facing a tough re-election campaign. Many will have you believe that this right stance will hurt him, they are wrong. Please take a moment and donate to his campaign to help him come back to Congress so we can [ban assualt weapons].”
