Democrats were blindsided by Kamala adopting ‘no tax on tips’ stance they once called a ‘ploy’ for votes

Vice President Kamala Harris apparently went rogue with her endorsement of a proposal endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Democrats had previously knocked “no tax on tips” as “bogus” and nothing more than a “ploy” for votes. The proposal would exempt service workers’ tips from taxes, putting more money into the pockets of people who need it most. Trump had originally floated the idea during meetings with Republican lawmakers in June, and Harris may be trying to capitalize on any popularity it gained him.

Meanwhile, Democrats fear that it would leave out lower-income employees who don’t work for tips but also deserve tax relief. Experts warn of the potential impact of the proposal, estimating that it could cost the government “much more than the $100 billion to $200 billion it is currently projected to add to the national debt over the next 10 years” according to The Hill.

They also worry that not taxing tips would give employers a reason not to raise base-level pay, which has always been lower than average for hospitality and service workers who receive tips as compensation for their jobs. These issues, among others, are why it was so shocking to hear Harris come out in support of the proposal, effectively blindsiding her party.

“It’s not something I saw coming,” a senior Senate Democratic aide said. “I did not expect her to go on the tipped-wage thing. I did not see it as a serious proposal from Trump and it doesn’t become a serious proposal now.”

Her flip-flop caught the attention of social media:
