DeSantis’ conservative appointment to college board of trustees sparks glorious leftist meltdown

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared war on “woke” colleges, and “woke” leftists can’t stand it one single bit.

On Friday, to be exact, the governor appointed six new non-“woke” members to the New College of Florida’s Board of Trustees to overhaul the school’s “woke” agenda.

Included among those appointed to the board was the one and only Chris Rufo, an avid anti-“woke” and anti-critical theory activist whose work has been instrumental in exposing the radicalism that’s being promoted in schools throughout the nation.

Naturally, Rufo’s inclusion in the list of new trustees provoked a massive temper tantrum, particularly from so-called “journalists.”

Case in point:

Media Matters, a Democrat propaganda outfit, even wrote a whole piece about Rufo.

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed right-wing activist Christopher Rufo, who rose to national prominence demonizing racial justice advocates and attacking LGBTQ communities, to the board of trustees of the New College of Florida. The appointment is all the more noteworthy given that Rufo lives in Gig Harbor, Washington,” the piece reads.

“Rufo is a senior fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute and has spent years attempting to inject bigotry and incorrect information into mainstream discourses about gay and trans people, drag queens, and the academic discipline known as critical race theory. Rufo is also a frequent guest on Fox News, including on Tucker Carlson’s prime-time show,” it continues.

Their description of Rufo was, of course, nonsense. In 2020, for example, he criticized violent Black Lives Matter rioters, not so-called “racial justice advocates.”

Meanwhile, he hasn’t attacked “LGBTQ communities.” He has, however, exposed the way some LGBT teachers are trying to indoctrinate their students in LGBT ideology.

Also, critical race theory is more than just an “academic discipline.” It’s a hateful ideology that categorizes people’s worth by the color of their skin.

It is true though that Rufo doesn’t live in Florida, not that this matters.

Dovetailing back to DeSantis, the question remains, why is he doing this? Because change is needed, his aides have said.

“Unfortunately, like so many colleges and universities in America, this institution has been completely captured by a political ideology that puts trendy, truth-relative concepts above learning,” DeSantis’ communications director, Taryn Fenske, said in a statement.

“It is our hope that New College of Florida will become Florida’s classical college, more along the lines of a Hillsdale of the south,” Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz added.

Hillsdale College is one of the most anti-“woke,” conservative colleges in the country.

Critics are predictably already crying foul given New College of Florida’s left-wing roots.

“The shakeup of the 13-member board is certain to create major tensions at New College, an institution that started as a progressive private school before becoming the state’s liberal arts honors college. The small school’s student body and faculty have a reputation for leaning left politically,” the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.

“Turning New College into a Florida version of Hillsdale would amount to flipping it upside down, a wholesale reinvention akin to a hostile takeover, and one that many current students and faculty are likely to resist,” the outlet added.

Perhaps, though for the moment the “resistance” is coming almost entirely from social media left-wingers like Thomas Kennedy and Jordan Zakarin. That said, for every critic, there’s a staunch DeSantis supporter or two, three, or more.

Moreover, the governor’s work at New College is reportedly just the beginning. Earlier this week, he issued a memo demanding that every state university provide an accounting of how much it’s spending on promoting “woke” ideas.

“It is important that we have a full understanding of the operational expenses of state institutions. This letter is a request for information from the Department of Education and the State University System regarding the expenditure of state resources on programs and initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion, and critical race theory within our state colleges and universities,” the letter reads.

Expect more liberal tears in 3, 2, 1 …
