DOGE has a new leader and it’s not Big Balls

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has brought in a new acting administrator, but who is she?

For those keeping up with the lightning-fast pace of President Donald Trump’s administration, Amy Gleason is a name that you may recognize. Following the White House’s statement that billionaire CEO Elon Musk is not actually running DOGE, Gleason has been brought in to oversee its operation. The 53-year-old woman has previously served under Trump’s first administration at the U.S. Digital Service. She then left to work at Russell Street Ventures before rejoining the service late last year, where DOGE leader Brad Smith brought her into the department’s conversations.

Gleason also worked on the COVID-19 response with Health and Human Services during the president’s previous term.

Before her work with Trump, she was working on healthcare reform according to an Obama-era White House website page.

“Amy Gleason began her career in nursing and then discovered a passion for technology. She recognized that technology can improve healthcare, and spent years building and implementing electronic medical record and practice management technologies,” the page reads. “In June 2010, her daughter was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, which opened her eyes to an entirely new set of challenges in the healthcare system. In her role as caregiver, she was responsible for keeping her daughter’s care organized, efficient, and effective. As the Chief Operating Officer of CareSync, Amy draws on these experiences to help patients and their families better coordinate care and improve health outcomes. Additionally, Amy proudly volunteers as the Vice President of Research for the Cure JM Foundation, a nonprofit that funds research, raises awareness, and supports families of children with Juvenile Myositis.”

From 2014 to 2018, she served as vice president for research at the Cure JM Foundation. Her LinkedIn page also notes that she is a co-founder and executive at Care Sync in Florida.

“Experienced executive with a demonstrated history of improving healthcare technology, including electronic medical records, practice management, patient solutions, interoperability, and federal civic tech,” her LinkedIn page reads. “My work is inspired by my firsthand experience navigating the healthcare system as a patient and a caregiver, and I am passionate about creating a better healthcare experience and improving health outcomes.”

It remains to be seen how her experience as a career official will help achieve DOGE’s goal of slicing through bureaucratic bloat.
