Donald Trump’s dislike of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came shining through once again on Sunday when the former president said that it was the GOP Senate leader’s “fault” that his party failed to retake the Senate.
“It’s Mitch McConnell’s fault. Spending money to defeat great Republican candidates instead of backing Blake Masters and others was a big mistake. Giving 4 Trillion Dollars to the Radical Left for the Green New Deal, not Infrastructure, was an even bigger mistake,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He continued, “He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!”
The latter remark, directed at McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who served as transportation secretary in the Trump administration, was pounced on by the media as a “racist” attack — this is not the first time Trump used the nickname.
Republicans lost the Senate after Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., was declared the winner over Trump-backed Republican Blake Masters on Friday and the continued counting in Nevada finally ate away GOP challenger Adam Laxalt’s lead, with incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto being declared the winner on Saturday.
In what would have been considered inconceivable a week ago, it’s now up in the air as to whether the GOP will even take control of the House. The latest numbers, according to Fox News, show Republicans have 212 seats and Democrats have 204, with 19 seats still in play — 218 is needed to have the majority.
Should Trump be reelected to the White House in 2024, it’s difficult to imagine how he could salvage a working relationship with McConnell, whom he has called the “Old Crow” on more than one occasion.
But then, he may not have to. Trump shared an article from The Federalist that said “a growing chorus of Republicans is signaling it’s time for McConnell’s tenure in Senate leadership to end.”
“Agree with this 100%! Mitch McConnell is a disaster for the Republican Party and the Country. He should have improved Infrastructure to fix it, not the Green New Deal, wrapped up like Infrastructure. He gave the Democrats 4 Trillion Dollars to throw out the window, and backed bad candidates like Lisa Murkowski,” Trump wrote.
Suggesting McConnell “sabotaged Republicans in the 2022 midterms,” The Federalists’ Elle Purnell said the GOP leader was guilty of “pulling spending from competitive GOP candidates such as Blake Masters and even actively spending money against state GOP-endorsed candidates like Alaska’s Kelly Tshibaka.”
At the same time, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and others have called for postponing a vote this week for Senate GOP leadership.
