Ex-Border Patrol official dreams big on deportations—really big

Life after Border Patrol may include political aspirations for Gregory Bovino, as he cited “grassroots support” for his “one and only priority” involving “106 million illegals.”

Earlier in the year, as Operation Metro Surge became a central focus of corporate media, then-Border Patrol Commander-at-Large Bovino loomed large until two law enforcement-involved fatal shootings preceded his departure from Minnesota. Now, having retired from his career with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the former official has made deportations the focus of a potential 2028 presidential run.

Following an initial report from The Daily Beast, NewsNation’s coverage regarding Bovino’s consideration of a White House bid prompted his response on X: “Here’s the truth: My one and only priority is deporting the 106 million illegals who are here. That’s it. The grassroots support I’m seeing tells me the polls are completely wrong…”

“If I’m getting this much energy, it’s probably because 90% of the country wants mass deportations and the media just isn’t asking the right questions. My commitment is simple, liberate America from this invasion and restore our quality of life,” he went on concluding with a link to an exploratory committee website. “If running for President is what it takes actually to get it done, then all options are on the table. House Bovino. Men fight back.”

Regarding the 106 million estimate, the retired official increased his previous estimate of 100 million after sharing a report regarding an H-1B visa investigation detailed by Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany. Of roughly 7 million visas processed since 2015, it was said the 70% were from India, and anywhere from 80-90% of those “involved fraudulent documents or unqualified applicants.”

However, a note tacked onto Bovino’s claim cited data from the Pew Research Center that indicated the number of applications did not reflect the number of people present, as it included both denials and renewals.

The flip side of the nine-figure high is the oft-repeated low estimate between 10 million and 15 million, despite years of open border policies and ongoing investigations of rampant fraud.

Regardless of the true figure, the leftist protests, the lawfare aimed at obstructing efforts at deportation, and naysayers claiming the objective is either too costly or simply infeasible, public sentiment has barely shifted while negative coverage of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has raged.

As was reported, a survey conducted by Marquette Law School found that between November 2025 and the end of January 2026, support for deporting “immigrants who are living in the United States illegally” only lost two points, dropping from 58% to 56%. Favor for deportations declined to 44% when the focus was placed on longtime illegal aliens with “jobs and no criminal record.”

With regard to how Bovino envisioned such a massive operation taking place, a statement reported by the Beast expressed, “If I were President, I’d lead that effort from the front and be on the front lines from time to time.”
