Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly already looking at potential running mates Sunday, soon after President Joe Biden announced his exit from the Democratic ticket.
While it remains to be seen if Harris emerges as the party’s nominee at the Democratic National Convention next month, she wasted no time looking at potential running mates on Sunday. Sources close to the vice president told CNN’s Jamie Gangel that Harris was reportedly zeroing in on Democrats such as Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
“The first thing I’m told that they’re looking at is logistics. They have a campaign to put together,” Gangel told the CNN panel. “She has to get the nomination. She has to see [if] anyone’s going to challenge her.”
Gangel, who sparked backlash last week when she complained about former President Trump yelling “Fight, fight, fight!” after he was shot, noted that a potential list of VPs to run with Harris could scare away “some challengers” who might be considering getting in the race against her.

Soon after the report on the VP shortlist, Shapiro released a statement endorsing Harris.
“I’ve known Kamala Harris for nearly two decades – we’ve both been prosecutors, we’ve both stood up for the rule of law, we’ve both fought for the people and delivered results,” Shapiro said.
“Kamala Harris is a patriot worthy of our support and she will continue the work of generations of Americans who came before us to perfect our union, protect our democracy, and advance real freedom. She has served the country honorably as Vice President and she is ready to be President,” he added.
The contrast in this race could not be clearer and the road to victory in November runs right through Pennsylvania – where this collective work began.

“The best path forward for the Democratic Party is to quickly unite behind Vice President Harris and refocus on winning the presidency,” Shapiro said in the statement. “The contrast in this race could not be clearer and the road to victory in November runs right through Pennsylvania – where this collective work began. I will do everything I can to help elect Kamala Harris as the 47th President of the United States.”
Over the past week, VP Kamala Harris stumped with two prominent Dem governors– NC’s Roy Cooper and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro– largely being floated as potential running mates.

CNN’s John King told Anderson Cooper that Shapiro’s Jewish background may pose a problem for the potential Harris campaign.
