Multiple carjackings and a series of officer-involved shootings were part of a San José crime spree brought to a deadly conclusion, caught on video Wednesday.
Bearing the hallmarks of a Hollywood production, police likened one man’s criminal behavior to that of “an action movie” that involved a member of the San José Police Department suffering a skull fracture. That gunfight was swiftly followed by a vehicle takedown of the 30-year-old suspect, convicted felon Mohamed Husein, who was declared dead at the scene.
According to the SJPD, carjackings and armed robberies from over the weekend had continued to Wednesday when another carjacking had prompted air support and a slow-speed pursuit. Following the chase, “The suspect then exited the vehicle, while armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect fled and was located again where a second officer-involved shooting occurred. SJPD Officers were not involved in either incident.”
“The suspect then committed a subsequent armed carjacking and fled the city of Hollister in a second stolen vehicle. Officers from multiple agencies pursued the suspect as he drove at high speeds on the freeway, returning to the city of San José, at which point SJPD Officers assumed control of the pursuit on city streets,” the press release detailed, as the criminal actions had taken place across three counties.
Following a collision with a stopped vehicle, the suspect was seen exiting his vehicle, charging at SJPD Sergeant Silva whom he shot in the head, fracturing the officer’s skull before a failed effort to make off with the patrol vehicle found the suspect fleeing on foot and attempting another carjacking before being struck by a separate patrol car at which point officers neutralized the suspect.

“Every officer involved in yesterday’s harrowing incident will carry the heaviness of what happened for the rest of their lives,” SJPD Chief Paul Joseph said in a statement. “Some members of the public who were caught in the crossfire described it as the closest thing to war they have ever witnessed–and that gives you a sense of how intense and terrifying those moments were, not just for officers, but for the community.”
A photo shared by the police revealed the handgun said to have been used by the suspect during his crime spree. It included an extended magazine, demonstrating that Second Amendment restrictions did not prevent criminals from gaining access. “It’s almost as if the laws only apply to law abiding citizens.”

As for the injured sergeant, SJPD reported, “We’re happy to report that SJPD Sergeant Silva was officially released from the hospital this afternoon and is back home with his pups. We’re hopeful for his speedy recovery and thankful to the staff at VMC for taking such good care of our brother.”
Additionally, footage from outside the hospital captured the moment when Silva could be seen walking out with a bandage on his head, met with a salute and support from his fellow law enforcement officers.
