Hakeem Jeffries faces backlash after urging athlete boycotts over redistricting disputes

Court rulings against the left’s racially motivated congressional maps found House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) resorting to boycott bullying in a bid to get school support.

“These universities should feel compelled to speak up…”

Where the federal government has fallen short on election integrity, failing to overcome swamp opposition to the SAVE America Act, state governments have stepped up with redistricting efforts that favor potential GOP gains. Fearing loss of control and yet another possible missed opportunity to take the gavel as House speaker, Jeffries joined the NAACP in pushing athletes to boycott schools that don’t speak out against redistricting.

“This is an unprecedented moment, featuring an unprecedented attack on black political representation, and therefore it requires an unprecedented response,” argued the congressman who gathered with the NAACP and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, specifically pointing out Southeastern Conference (SEC) universities.

“We are here standing in solidarity with the NAACP and its call for athletes to boycott institutions within the SEC that belong to states that have unleashed these Jim Crow-like racially oppressive tactics, which is unacceptable, unconscionable, and un-American,” railed Jeffries. “And we believe that the silence of these institutions is complicity, and we will not stand for it.”

“These universities should feel compelled to speak up … because it’s the right thing to do,” contended the lawmaker amid the latest boycott push from the NAACP. Previously, the organization sought to weaponize $2 trillion in “black dollars” by creating a blacklist of organizations walking back support for Marxist DEI policies.

The same day, Jeffries appeared on stage at the Center for American Progress’ 2026 IDEAS Conference, where he contended, “either MAGA extremists are gonna break the country, or we’re gonna break them. And our goal is to break them. We will defeat them. We have to beat them electorally, and then we have to break their spirit because of the extremism that’s being unleashed on the American people, that’s completely and totally unacceptable.”

Reacting to the remarks, Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters wrote on X, “The majority of Americans voted for President Trump in 2024 — Democrats want to break those who did. Democrats are only interested in revenge, not serving the American people. We cannot let them win.”

“Welcome to what I’ve started to call Project 42,” the minority leader said during the press conference with a nod to famed Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson after insisting, “And for us to get through this moment of backlash and usher in a new era of progress, as has been done by generations in the past, it’s gonna require character, it’s gonna require courage and it’s gonna require conviction.”

“This is a Bill Russell moment. It’s a Muhammad Ali moment. And it’s a Jackie Robinson moment,” furthered the lawmaker. “And we’re gonna stand together to make sure we bring about the type of country that the African American community deserves and that everyone in the United States of America deserves.”
