A Florida deputy is being hailed as a hero for saving a young boy in the middle of a hostage situation.
Deputy Anthony Gonzalez rescued a terrified 7-year-old boy who was being held at knifepoint by his own brother, 27-year-old Mario Camacho. The suspect was allegedly choking the child, prompting their sister to dial 911 and plead for help. She was reportedly bleeding from her mouth and had suffered minor lacerations.
As authorities arrived, the suspect reportedly grabbed his younger brother and dragged him “in a back bedroom with a knife and was holding him against his will.” Bodycam footage shows the terrifying moment that the officer was forced to take extreme action to ensure the child’s safety.

“For lack of a better term, he was hostage in his own house,” said Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer.
Gonzalez called out to the pair, asking for the child to be allowed to leave. When it was clear that the suspect had no interest in letting the 7-year-old leave, Gonzalez broke down the door and demanded the suspect surrender. Unfortunately, the helmet-wearing suspect gave the deputy no other option, and Gonzalez fired one shot, taking down the suspect and freeing the young boy. Camacho was pronounced deceased at a local hospital a short while later.
Additional details reveal that Camacho was also wearing “two tactical vests with ballistic plates,” indicating that he was prepared for an armed standoff with the police.
“The deputy involved is Antonio Gonzalez, 25, and has been with HCSO for just under six years, spending five years as a Detention Deputy and 11 months as a Law Enforcement Deputy,” a press release regarding the shooting reads. “Deputy Gonzalez has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending completion of the investigation.”
“Yes, we rescued a boy, and yes, it could have been much worse. There’s no doubt in my mind that the child would have been harmed if not for the actions of our deputies. But right now in the aftermath of that heroic action, there is a family that has to pick up the pieces,” Maurer said.
Camacho had reportedly been the subject of “two previous domestic violence charges, neither of which resulted in a conviction, and was also a suspect of a Baker Act, which generally indicates that he met the legal criteria for an involuntary mental health examination,” according to Fox News.
