It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s taxpayer-funded government salary was slashed to $1 on Tuesday by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives — the measure passed late Tuesday via voice vote as an amendment to the 2024 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, according to Fox News.
The amendment to the standalone funding bill that covers the General Services Administration, Securities and Exchange Commission and other related agencies was introduced by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) — it remains to be seen if the measure remains in the overall bill.
“I’m proud to announce my amendment to FIRE Pete Buttigieg just PASSED the House,” Greene tweeted after the vote. “Pothole Pete staged fake bike rides to the White House and used private planes funded by taxpayers to receive awards for the way certain people have sex. American taxpayers should not be on the hook for paying for his lavish trips or his salary.”

Of course, the measure does not actually fire Buttigieg — somewhat comically, X’s Community Notes felt the need to point this out — but if someone is not being paid for the position they hold, it’s essentially the same thing.
In responding to a tweet from TPUSA reporter Savanah Hernandez, Greene added: “Pete Buttigieg doesn’t do his job. It’s all about fake photo ops and taxpayer-funded private jet trip to accept LGBTQ awards for him,” Greene added. “I’m happy my amendment passed, but he doesn’t deserve a single penny.”

Buttigieg, who appears to have an affinity for using government-maintained private jets, has faced heated criticism over his handling of several issues, including the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, where vinyl chloride, a dangerous colorless gas, was released, and the problems in commercial airline travel.
In another tweet, Greene said, “Pete Buttigieg doesn’t serve the American people. It took him weeks to visit East Palestine after a toxic train derailment happened on his watch. My amendment to cut his salary to $1 is paying him too much.”
Caitlin Sutherland, executive director for Americans for Public Trust (APT) called the Biden official out for his lack of transparency when it comes to the use of private jets.
“Secretary Buttigieg continues to blow off the American people who simply want to know the true cost of his taxpayer-funded private jet trips,” Sutherland told Fox News Digital. “After multiple FOIA requests, a lawsuit, and an ongoing inspector general investigation, Buttigieg’s office still refuses to provide vital details about using a private government jet for a swing state tour, which appears more akin to campaigning than official DOT business.”
“Buttigieg looks to be politicizing his role and making it clear that he believes he’s above accountability and transparency, a dismissive attitude that seems to be endemic throughout the Biden administration,” Sutherland added.
