President Biden has said he’s “taking a hard look” at forgiving some student loans as midterm elections near. In addition to polling showing the president doing poorly with young people, the Democratic Party is widely expected to take a shellacking in November and the move is seen as an attempt to curry favor at the ballot box.
Republicans are calling the forgiving of student debt a windfall for the rich, as many high-income, college-educated professionals stand to benefit, but that didn’t stop the NAACP from engaging to suggest it’s time for Biden to act.
Taking to Twitter, the NAACP shared a video clip of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., publicly advocating for Biden to take action while noting that the radical left Democrat “still carries student loan debt.”
“We are here to tell the president that with a stroke of the pen, he can and should, and must cancel student debt,” Omar says in the clip, despite the apparent conflict of interest.
Isn’t this a conflict of interest: a sitting member of Congress voting to eliminate her own debt? And this is on top of the many other problems with this terrible idea. https://t.co/hZG64RNV24

As a member of Congress, Omar has a $174,000 annual salary and she is not the only member of “the Squad” who effectively acts in her own personal interest to push for the forgiveness of student loan debt.
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other progressives have made student loans a top priority, aiming to eliminate student debt entirely and make higher education free for all. Ocasio-Cortez reported owing between $15,001 and $50,000 in student loan debt in her most recent financial disclosure. Two of her closest allies in the House, Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), also are paying back student loans,” Open Secrets reported in April 2020.
Needless to say, the overall idea and Omar standing to benefit are not going over well online… here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
A person with her income still carrying that debt isn’t making good financial decisions for themselves, let alone for us

It’s also deeply unpopular outside of their own political base. But they are getting increasingly desperate even to get their base voters to show up in November.

Can I get a refund on the student loans I paid off. I make a lot less than many of these people who don’t have to pay now.

She makes $174,000 per year. If she still has student debt that’s her problem, not her constituents’—the vast majority of whom do not have student debt.

It’s interesting that the NAACP is using her to promote their message. With her, I’m surprised she hasn’t blamed her student debt on the Jews or Israel.

She makes almost $200,000 a year and in 2020 her campaign paid her husband’s consulting firm more than $1,000,000. If she has student loans still it’s by choice. Kinda gross she’s calling for single mom waitresses to pick up her tab. https://t.co/cn5hRhl02Y
