Jim Jordan makes his move for House GOP leadership after Democrats take control

Republicans may be tasting bitter defeat in the wake of the midterms, but some are already mobilizing for the future.

After losing Congressional control to Democrats on Tuesday, the GOP is once again in the position of figuring out how to lead as a minority party. On Wednesday, Fox News Digital reported that House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, will be putting his name out there to become House Minority Leader.

“Jordan began making calls to colleagues after House Republicans’ massive losses began taking shape late on Tuesday night,” the outlet reported, citing two anonymous sources.

In a letter obtained by the outlet, Jordan reacted to the party’s brutal midterm defeat, acknowledging the losses suffered and putting his hat in the ring to lead moving forward.

“We are all losing colleagues and friends who’ve been valuable members of our Conference and leaders in our party. As we look to the future, we must learn from these results,” he wrote. “I am battle-tested on the oversight front and I know the Democrats’ playbook. I know what it will take to lead our Conference in the minority, to stay unified, and to coordinate and calibrate our response to the Democrats’ tactics.”

Having a strong presence will be important for Republicans who want to fight back against the Democratic agenda, especially as far-left, DSA-backed candidates prepare to take seats, cast votes and draft legislation. President Donald Trump has vowed to become “Mr. Veto” in the event of a blue wave, but he will still need staunch allies in both chambers to get anything done in his last two years.

According to sources who spoke to Fox News Digital, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, will not be seeking the minority speaker role. However, Jordan could still face a challenge from current House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana.

In his letter, Jordan also stressed the importance of delivering on Republican principles in order to restore voters’ faith in the party.

“In these next two years, our job cannot be merely to spotlight how radical this new Democrat party is – offense, not defense, wins elections. Republican policies prioritize making Americans’ neighborhoods safer, keeping more money in their pockets, and protecting enduring American values and freedoms. To restore our majority, we must restore voters’ faith in our ability to deliver on these principles,” he explained.

“We can expect Democrat legislation to wreak havoc on every sector of our economy and transform time-tested American institutions. Meanwhile, Democrats have already signaled their true intentions. Each Democrat-led committee will turn its full attention to investigating every facet of the Administration and private entities across the country,” he continued, pitching himself as the right person to lead the defense of the Trump administration against the onslaught that is predicted to come.
