Jon Stewart unloads on Welker over awkward Trump interview moment

The president wasn’t alone in taking barbs as a host of “The Daily Show” ripped NBC News’ Kristen Welker over “one of the worst pleas in the history of journalism.”

During a trip to Wisconsin last week, President Donald Trump sat with Welker for an extensive interview that ended with him walking out amid an argument over election integrity. While Jon Stewart had plenty to say about the chief executive’s remarks, it was the journalist’s lament about traveling to The Dairy State that earned ridicule.

After airing the clip of the president saying, “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough,” Stewart contended, “But this is where Kristen Welker nearly undoes all of the good work she did with one of the worst pleas in the history of journalism.”

“Mr. President, let’s… please, I traveled all the way to Wisconsin,” the “Meet the Press” host implored, leaving the comedian to mock, “You can’t leave, sir! I was in business class! … Mr. President, please, Wisconsin. ‘Wheel of Fortune’ is on an hour earlier here. These people are savages. Their Chinese restaurants only serve Szechuan. No Cantonese to be found. We’ll all die of consumption.”

“But you know what? Maybe finally, this moment will give journalists permission to not back down. To not just leave it there and move on. And to finally be honest about Trump’s inability to be challenged in the moment,” he went on before a clip of Welker addressing “complications” caused by rain earned his response, “You were inside! There was no challenge from the rain! F*ck that! No! Donald Trump was not thrown off by the ambient noise during the interview. In fact, ambient farm rain is the least disruptive noise environment he conducts interviews in!”

The host further insisted, “Donald Trump didn’t storm out because of the rain. He stormed out because he was challenged, not because he was distracted. So maybe it’s time we stop making excuses for that man in order to preserve access to his constant bullsh*t.”

Digs at the president also included a deflection from Stewart over the election integrity concerns raised by Trump. Before running the clip, he referred to the argument as “The failsafe, in case of journalism, break glass. The epipen in case you’ve been stung by reality.”

He then left the matter of the recent California primary election unaddressed and instead retreated to the same talking points about the 2020 presidential election that have been reiterated ad nauseam in the years since. Meanwhile, as was previously reported, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli cited a plea deal by a woman who’d admitted to paying homeless people to register to vote in Los Angeles as he indicated “multiple election fraud investigations” had been opened.
