Justice Stephen Breyer announces he will officially step aside after overturn of Roe

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer has announced that he will be retiring Thursday at noon, making way for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Breyer had previously expressed to President Joe Biden his intent to retire at the end of the current term and revealed that he will officially be stepping down from his position at noon on June 30. At this time, the court will hand down the rest of its final opinions.

“The Court has announced that tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m., it will hand down all remaining opinions ready during this Term. Accordingly, my retirement from active service under the provisions of 28 U.S.C. § 371(b) will be effective on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at noon,” Breyer said in a letter to Biden announcing his departure from the court.

“It has been my great honor to participate as a judge in the effort to maintain our Constitution and the Rule of Law,” he added.

It didn’t take long for liberals to react on social media, still livid from the SCOTUS decision that overturned Roe v Wade and sent decisions on abortion laws back to the states.
