Hypocrisy reigned in the ayatollah’s Iran as one of the supreme leader’s advisers reportedly blamed Israel after video of his own daughter’s revealing wedding dress was leaked.
Much like North Korean officials might claim their people are well-fed, leaders in Iran have made bold claims about women’s rights while cracking down on violations of modesty laws. Adding insult to brutal — and even fatal — injury, Expediency Council member Ali Shamkhani went viral recently as he was seen escorting his daughter, Fatemah, in a strapless, low-cut wedding dress.
The footage from the 2024 ceremony at Tehran’s ritzy Espinas Palace Hotel showed the bride with her parents and the groom in a room filled with women, including quite a few not wearing veils.

Images from the event had sparked accusations of hypocrisy against the adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had served as the Supreme National Security Council’s (SNSC) secretary when crackdowns had been ordered against demonstrations protesting modesty laws. Those laws had infamously led to the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody in 2022.
Amini’s murder had been recognized by the U.S. State Department on the third anniversary in September in a release that read in part, “Her murder, along with so many others, is a damning indictment of the Islamic Republic’s crimes against humanity. The United States will continue to work with allies and partners around the world to ensure that the regime’s atrocities are met with accountability, justice, and resolve.”
In an attempt to defend the alleged violations of Iran’s laws in the video, former regime minister Ezzatollah Zarghami had contended that the event was “female-only” and “Some women were veiled, and the rest were close relatives.”
Meanwhile, Shamkhani played the victim as he accused Israel of leaking the video, and was quoted by Iran International as saying, “Hacking into people’s privacy is Israel’s new method of assassination.”

Making matters worse, the video had gone viral around the same time as a recent announcement of 80,000 new morality policy officers as part of the “Modesty and Hijab Operations Room,” according to The Jerusalem Post.
While some took umbrage with the expense of the ceremony amid economic sanctions, most were critical of the seeming display of “rules for thee but not for me” and the “Kardashian” levels of modesty from the bride when compared to what is considered acceptable.
“Total and utter hypocrisy! As usual with Marxists and Islamists, it’s one law for the many and another law for the few!” wrote one user on X as another suggested, “Sharia is for the people the ‘royalty’ is enjoying life.”
Another argued, “They forced themselves into the private life of every Iranian. From how we dress, which god we believe, who we sleep with, what we drink, what we listen to, what we write, what we eat… The result? They [can’t] even throw a normal wedding [without] causing a nationwide scandal.”
