Journalist and LGBTQ activist Josh Kruger, 39, was shot seven times inside his home early Monday morning and then tried to get help outside at about 1:30 a.m. He was shot in the chest and abdomen and staggered outside his Point Breeze home where he collapsed, according to police. Kruger was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds about half an hour later, according to the Daily Mail.
“The Dilbert dude is like Nostradamus. Look at this prediction from 2020. Wow. Eerie,” Kruger wrote.
Kruger posted to Facebook two weeks before his death that someone had come to his home searching for their boyfriend.
“‘A man I’ve never met once in my entire life.’ The person referred to themselves as ‘Lady Diabla, the She-Devil of the Streets,'” he recounted claiming the person threatened him.
Detectives believe that someone entered Kruger’s home and shot him at the base of his stairs, Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore told The Philadelphia Inquirer. The shooter fled, he said, and Kruger ran outside seeking help from neighbors.
No arrests have been made and there were no signs of forced entry into the home. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and trying to determine a motive.
“Either the door was open, or the offender knew how to get the door open,” Vanore said. “We just don’t know yet.”
Police responded to reports of gunshots and screams, finding Kruger in the street bleeding out.
The suspect or suspects remain at large.
“Detectives believe Kruger’s death may have been the result of a domestic dispute or may have been drug-related, according to three law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, said police investigators recovered troubling text messages between Kruger and a former partner. Investigators also recovered methamphetamine inside Kruger’s bedroom, the sources said,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Kruger was a former addict who had been homeless and rose above his circumstances to become the social media manager for Philadelphia’s mayor. The openly gay, HIV-positive activist worked for the city’s government from 2016 to 2021 as the communications director for the city’s Office of Homeless Services.
The news of Kruger’s tragic death resurfaced in many X posts where the journalist criticized warnings of rising crime.
Two days prior to his murder, Kruger had responded to a tweet from humorist Scott Adams, ridiculing him for his prediction that “there’s a good chance you will be dead” if President Biden was elected.

Unfortunately, Josh Kruger’s online legacy will be his posts over the years downplaying violent crime in Philadelphia. “Josh cared deeply about our city and its residents, which was evident both in his public service and in his writing,” the mayor stated.
“His intelligence, creativity, passion, and wit shone bright in everything that he did – and his light was dimmed much too soon,” Kenney commented.
The city’s District Attorney Larry Krasner also paid tribute to Kruger on Monday, “As an openly queer writer who wrote about his own journey surviving substance use disorder and homelessness… Josh Kruger lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities. Particularly unhoused people living with addiction. Josh deserved to write the ending of his personal story.”
Kruger was currently writing as a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia City Paper, and others.
Philadelphia police data reveals that Kruger is one of at least 330 homicides to occur in the City of Brotherly Love this year.
