French President Emmanuel Macron defeated challenger Marine Le Pen for a second term despite approval ratings of less than 40 percent, which prompted White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain to seize upon the outcome to boost President Biden’s own failings.
The Washington Post responded to Macron’s win to suggest that the French were more motivated to vote against Le Pen than for the incumbent – Le Pen did better this time around than she did in the last election against Macron five years ago.
“To an uncomfortable extent, Emmanuel Macron’s majority reflected not voter enthusiasm for him but voter rejection of far-right challenger Marine Le Pen,” Washington Post Opinions tweeted.
This being something Macron seems to understand, as he told cheering supporters who gathered near the Eiffel Tower, “To those who voted for me, not to support my ideas but to block those of the extreme right, your vote obliges me. This evening, I am no longer the candidate of one camp, but the President of all.”
Klain took to Twitter to offer this take on the French election: “An interesting observation, just FYI. President Macron appears to have secured a double-digit victory over LePen, at a time when his approval rating is 36%. Hmmm….”
Clearly, he’s looking to plug his own boss’s chances, given that Biden is as equally unpopular among American voters, but in doing so Klain undermined the president’s contention that the polls are not accurate, as noted here:
Joe Biden said he didn’t believe the polls (sounds familiar). Here’s the Tweeter In Chief not only acknowledging the polls, but insinuating he can win with them anyway.
Just an incredible take. https://t.co/EBvBjXtib9

In a follow-up tweet, Stephen L. Miller, aka @RedSteeze, added: “I think it was @SaysSimonson who first noticed how this WH and Klain always manage to brag about their complete failures.”
Not only that, but they don’t seem to care that “the majority of Americans disapprove of what they’re doing,” as Christina Pushaw, press secretary for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, suggested:
White House Chief of Staff implies that Biden can win re-election with 36% approval. The Biden Administration knows that the majority of Americans disapprove of what they’re doing, but they do not care. Disturbing. And why would Klain tweet this?! https://t.co/r0pTXjp2PT

Here’s a quick sampling of other responses to the “strange flex” from Klain, as seen on Twitter:
