New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is coming under fire for his decision to publicly mourn a prisoner charged with murder.
On Thursday, Mamdani posted his condolences for the man and his family on X. Critics argue that he left out important information about the inmate that likely would have made people feel less sympathetic.

A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens. Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to The New York Post, the inmate in question was Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, who was “facing murder, manslaughter, robbery and weapons charges in connection with the 2025 slaying of 26-year-old autistic man Ron Marte.”
Reports indicate that Castillo was allegedly trying to rob Marte in what is being described as an “ambush.” Axel Martinez, an alleged accomplice in the case, is accused of ending the autistic man’s life by shooting him in the chest. Marte was on his way home from his shift at Amazon when he was fatally confronted in Starlight Park in the Bronx.
“The Department of Correction staff saw Castillo, 20, in ‘medical distress’ at Queens Criminal Court about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and performed CPR until EMS took him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m., according to DOC, which said they are still investigating the death,” The Post reported.
