Multiple leaks hours apart in Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines: ‘Hard to imagine’ they’re ‘accidental’

Reports came in early Tuesday morning that the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines had sprung some “mysterious leaks” and as Europe and Russia rushed to find the cause(s), Kyiv, Ukraine has floated a theory of its own.

Nord Stream 2 had experienced a leak early in the morning, followed by two more leaks being found in Nord Stream 1. Nord Stream 2 is currently out of commission as the result of sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war, while pipeline 1 is still active.

The Kremlin says it is “extremely concerned” about the incident, while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suspected that the leaks may not be “accidental.”

Ukraine’s advisor to the Head of the Office of the President Mykhailo Podolyak asserted that Russians had a hand in the destruction of the pipelines, even going so far as to dub the incident a “terrorist attack.”

“The large-scale “gas leak” from PP-1 is nothing more than a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression towards the EU. [Russia] wants to destabilize the economic situation in Europe and cause panic before winter. The best tyrant response and security investment is tanks for [Ukraine] . Especially German…” Podolyak tweeted.

The Swedish Seismic Institute reported that underwater “blasts” were recorded leading up to the pipeline leaks, though it’s unclear what caused them. However, they have stated in no uncertain terms that it was not an “earthquake.”

“The first happened at 2:03 am (0003 GMT) just southeast of Bornholm with a magnitude of 1.9. Then we also saw one at 7:04 pm on Monday night, another event a little further north and that seems to have been a bit bigger. Our calculations show a magnitude of 2.3,” said Peter Schmidt, an Uppsala University seismologist.
