Muslim group retracts Harris-Walz support; AOC ripped for demanding DNC ‘change course’ too late

A Muslim group supporting Vice President Kamala Harris announced it is disbanding after Palestinians were not given a voice at this week’s Democratic National Convention.

The “Muslim Women for Harris-Walz” group released a statement Thursday with hopes that there might still be a change before the end of the convention. The announcement came in the wake of a demand from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that the DNC “must change course” and allow a Palestinian American a speaking slot during the event in Chicago.

“We cannot in good conscience continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, in light of this new information from the uncommitted movement, that VP Harris’ team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker take the stage at the DNC,” the group said in a statement.

The statement claimed that the family of an American hostage held by Hamas “has shown more empathy towards Palestinian Americans and Palestinians than our candidate or the DNC has. This is a terrible message to send to Democrats. Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine.”

During Wednesday’s DNC speeches, the parents of hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin called for a ceasefire deal and release of the hostages that “ends the suffering of the innocent people in Gaza.”

There are reportedly 30 uncommitted delegates attending the DNC. The movement began during the Democratic primaries when the leftists were hoping to deny support for President Joe Biden who was expected to be the party’s nominee before he ended his re-election campaign in July.

“Uncommitted delegates began a sit-in outside the United Center in Chicago on Wednesday night after being informed that their request for a speaking slot had been denied. Abbas Alawieh, a delegate from Michigan and co-founder of the Uncommitted National Movement, told reporters that he received a call from a convention official on Wednesday, who said: ‘Abbas, the answer is no,'” Newsweek reported.

Ocasio-Cortez called out Democrats for not allowing a speech by a Palestinian American.

“Just as we must honor the humanity of hostages, so too must we center the humanity of the 40,000 Palestinians killed under Israeli bombardment,” she wrote on X.

“To deny that story is to participate in the dehumanization of Palestinians. The @DNC must change course and affirm our shared humanity,” she added.

While social media saw a mixed bag of reactions to the demise of the Muslim Women for Harris-Walz group, the posted comments by Ocasio-Cortez earned the leftist “Squad” member heavy backlash.
