Pelosi-aligned dark money group faces possible punishment for noncompliance with regs

A dark money nonprofit aligned with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has fallen out of compliance with California state requirements.

The Pelosi-affiliated group, House Majority Forward, has been delinquent in her home state of California for months and has been threatened with possible suspension or revocation, Fox News reported, citing state filings. Noncompliance means that the group cannot solicit or accept contributions in the state.

California’s attorney general’s office reportedly sent House Majority Forward a warning in June 2021, saying the group had failed to submit all required documents and must do so within 60 days, and sent another letter in January informing the group that it was “listed as delinquent” for failing to submit the required reports, according to Fox News.

“An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds,” the letter said. “The organization may also be subject to penalties and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry.”

The article said it was “impossible” to determine if the nonprofit raised money in the state since it fell out of compliance, but noted that its most recent tax forms showed a San Francisco-based fundraiser on its payroll.

The Hill reported last month that House Majority PAC and House Majority Forward “raked in more than $16 million during the first quarter.”

Fox News also said House Majority Forward “raked in tens of millions of dollars since its inception,” and its “most recent tax forms show that it had collected $29.7 million from undisclosed contributors in 2020, a $21.5 million increase over its founding year. The tax forms also show that it had paid three fundraisers throughout 2020.”

Federal Election Commission filings show that House Majority Forward’s affiliated PAC received nearly $9 million from more than 13,000 contributions in the state.

On its website, the group describes itself as “a progressive, non-profit organization committed to promoting economic growth and opportunity, social justice, environmental stewardship, and democracy in the United States of America. We aim to achieve these core goals through aggressive advocacy of policies that move America in the right direction.”

In November, House Majority Forward signaled that it was “doubling the size of its campaign to help [President] Biden pass his Build Back Better agenda.”

“We’re doubling our investment from $10 to $20 million in support of the Build Back Better agenda,” the group tweeted.

The group also has ties to Senate Democrats, according to Influence Watch.

“Majority Forward is associated with Senate Majority PAC, the super PAC aligned with Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate and controlled by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). The two organizations often share personnel,” the watchdog organization said.

The Washington Free Beacon noted in Sept. 2020 that the liberal advocacy groups “pushed more than $12 million in dark money contributions into the 2020 election.”
