Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, was bluntly asked who would “stop” the potential demolition of the Kennedy Center.
As BizPac Review previously reported, the Department of Justice alleges that if President Donald Trump’s administration is not allowed to continue its renovation efforts on the center, it should be torn down.
“Without those efforts, the Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years,” reads a court filing from the DOJ.
Critics immediately seized on this, accusing Trump of wanting to demolish the location because he isn’t getting his way. MS NOW’s Eugene Daniels asked Beatty, an ex officio member of the center’s board, what it would take to stop the destruction if the president wasn’t allowed to continue the renovations.

“If Donald Trump and the administration send, you know, construction crews to the Kennedy Center and decide to knock it down, who’s going to stop them? He knocked down the East Wing, and it’s still unclear if he was legally able to do that, but now the East Wing is gone, so it almost doesn’t matter. So I guess what is the plan?”
“Well, but the East Wing was not in court with the federal court with him doing it,” Beatty responded. The East Wing didn’t include a board of 40-some members who are named in this. If Donald Trump was going to do that, he probably could have done this. This started back in December of 2025. So I’m a little more hopeful with this because we are in court. And he may have thought about doing it when he was ordered to take his name down. People said he wouldn’t do that either, but he did. So I think there is a slight difference, but I don’t want to make light, Eugene, of your question, because I understand where you’re coming from, and that’s why we continue to go back to court.”
The congresswoman was then asked about the potential “impact” the demolition would have on Americans.
“I think that’s difficult to answer. But what I can say in part to that is, it has been overwhelming with the thousands of thousands of thousands of people across the United States who are writing in, who are traveling to stand outside the Kennedy Center, to stand outside the courtroom. I think that people should be very careful with this, because I think it could take a very different turn than the East Wing. This is a living memorial, the only memorial to an assassinated president that was beloved by many. So I think it could have a backfiring effect on a lot of other folks. If people don’t speak up and stand up with us. And that includes board members. That includes the Speaker of the House, who is also a member of this board,” she suggested.
