Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., warned President Donald Trump that the MAGA movement could “dissolve” due to two things.
While the left will tell you that Trump’s supporters would stand by his side through anything, Paul believes that choosing to invade Venezuela or continue sending American tax dollars to Ukraine could break that bond. Speaking to Reason for an interview, Paul explained why he thinks these two decisions could fundamentally destroy Trump’s legacy and base of support.
Watch:
Paul has been critical of the boat strikes in the Caribbean, questioning the legality of the sustained action against what the Trump administration claims are narco-terrorist vessels engaged in drug smuggling operations. A recent poll has indicated that the majority of Americans would not support the president taking action in Venezuela, which is something he said hasn’t been “ruled out” just yet.
The senator, who is not a fan of foreign intervention to begin with, believes that such a shocking move would “dissolve” MAGA.
“On the Republican side, a good, solid majority still are of the neoconservative variety and do believe in intervention, but they’ve masked that and they’ve been clever. So, Lindsey Graham has not changed his positions, but he’s clever, and he’s become very close to the president, influences the president. Same with Marco Rubio,” Paul explained to Nick Gillespie.
“So the pending invasion or regime change war in Venezuela is hatched by those people. I actually think Trump is the one who is least likely to want to do these things, but he is surrounded by people who believe in regime change and are goading him on. I do think, though, that if he invades Venezuela or if he approves significant arms sales, which are really gifts to Ukraine or more welfare to Ukraine, if he does either of those, the rift with Marjorie Greene will pale in comparison to what happens to his movement. If he invades Venezuela or gives more money to Ukraine, his movement will dissolve.”
Trump supporters are becoming increasingly fed up with the United States financially supporting other parts of the world while Americans suffer back home. After former President Joe Biden’s seemingly endless parade of money and gifts being sent to Ukraine, Trump was elected to not only secure the southern border and stabilize the inflated economy, but to put an end to the blank checks being handed out overseas.
It remains to be seen if the president will heed Paul’s warning.
