As investigations in the Republican-controlled House heat up, Senate Democrats appear poised to take advantage of their continued marginal majority to stoke the corporate media fires against former President Donald Trump based on a “bombshell” report from The New York Times.
With the indictment of former FBI agent Charles McGonigal for allegedly colluding with Russia, while himself being an integral player in advancing the Russian collusion narrative against Trump, as well as the progression of House investigations into possible influence peddling from President Joe Biden, it appears the left is looking for a narrative change. Enter Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) in his capacity as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, all too willing to trigger another witch hunt based on interviews with unnamed “current and former officials” about special counsel John Durham’s probe.
The Senator released a statement Monday naming the “bombshell New York Times report” as his motivation to investigate Durham’s investigation and wrote, “These reports about abuses in Special Counsel Durham’s investigation–so outrageous that even his longtime colleague quit in protest–are but one of many instances where former President Trump and his allies weaponized the Justice Department.”
“The Justice Department should work on behalf of the American people, not for the personal benefit of any president,” Durbin went on, despite repeated offenses by Attorney General Merrick Garland and the FBI not only targeting Trump, but concerned parents at PTA meetings too. “As we wait for the results of ongoing internal reviews, the Senate Judiciary Committee will do its part and take a hard look at these repeated episodes, and the regulations and policies that enabled them, to ensure such abuses of power cannot happen again.”
As previously reported, the Times report particularly laid into then-Attorney General Bill Barr’s appointing of Durham as special counsel to look into the Justice Department’s Russia collusion investigation against Trump. At one point in the “bombshell,” the outlet discussed a supposed tip from “Italian officials, to include a criminal investigation into suspicious financial dealings related to Mr. Trump. The specifics of the tip and how they handled the investigation remain unclear, but Mr. Durham brought no charges over it.”
“Mr. Barr and Mr. Durham decided that the tip was too serious and credible to ignore. But rather than assign it to another prosecutor, Mr. Barr had Mr. Durham investigate the matter himself — giving him criminal prosecution powers for the first time — even though the possible wrongdoing by Mr. Trump did not fall squarely within Mr. Durham’s assignment to scrutinize the origins of the Russia inquiry, the people said,” the Times noted.

So, much like former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s “bombshell” testimony before the January 6 committee that garnered mass media attention despite being hearsay, it appears as though Senate Democrats are prepared to use a tangent in an already conducted investigation that, on its face, leads nowhere as a potential excuse to generate more hearings in the never-ending public trial of Trump.
