Stephen A. Smith seems to be all over the map politically but is open to taking a shot at winning the Oval Office.
The ESPN host offered his take on the upcoming Superbowl’s black national anthem performance in a Daily Mail interview this week.
‘I understand that society can be very polarizing at times, but the reality is that segments of our population have a right to be prideful about their culture, their people. Everybody has a right to feel the way that they feel… if you’re not doing harm to anybody else, leave it be,” Smith said.
‘Well, black people have a right to feel the way that they feel – about whether there’s a black national anthem or anything… as long as it’s not something that’s harmful to America, the nation itself or to any segment of our population, what’s the problem?’ he asked.
Smith made waves recently when he admitted feeling “like a damn fool” for supporting Kamala Harris and explained how the Democrat Party has become completely out of touch on the issues Americans care about.
He even praised President Donald Trump for keeping his promises, “he’s doing what he said he was going to do,” Smith told Bill Maher in recent weeks.
But Smith appears to be changing his tune and is now calling Trump a “pain in the ass”, in a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Mail.
While admitting that he at least agrees with Trump on the “whole transgender issue with sports,” he saved room to question DOGE leader, Elon Musk.
“I am suspect about Elon Musk. He’s not an elected official. He hasn’t been confirmed,” Smith said. “So to give him this kind of power, where he’s got access to the Treasury, when you’re looking at checks and got access to people’s financial portfolios, I got a problem with that.
Musk has been seemingly working around the clock to uncover government waste, and it hasn’t taken him long to find it. His discoveries thus far have infuriated radical leftists and Democrat lawmakers.
But, Smith says he’s ultimately “down” with DOGE if it weeds out the “crooks.”
Smiths’ interview with Daily Mail came after a national survey that placed him as a Democrat presidential contender for 2028.
Failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris ran away with the poll with 33 percent while other noted figures like Pete Buttigieg and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez fell way behind at 9 and 6 percent respectively.
And while Smith showed up at a mere 2 percent, he’s not ruling out a presidential bid.
“You know, rather than talk about me being an elected official or a runner for the president of the United States, how about if I’m somebody with a voice as strong as Sean Hannity’s, as strong as Mark Levin’s, as strong as Rachel Maddow. How about that?” Smith told the DM.
If there was demand for him to run, however, Smith said he’d give it serious consideration. But added it would take money, and lots of it.
“I will confess like I said, I have no desire to do this, but assuming that I’m well off, that I have lots of money, and money is no longer a concern if the American people came to me and looked at me and said “Yo, man, we want you to run for office”, and I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States, I’m not gonna lie. I’ll think about that,” Smith said.
And then he reiterated the crucial part about the people, ahem, money.
“But I gotta have my money. I’m not gonna go to the White House broke. I’m not gonna do that. I gotta have my money. I gotta have my home. I gotta have my financial situation completely taken care of. I have no concerns if that happens for me.
Smith said he’d entertain a presidential run if he were loaded with cash, and because he believes he’d mop the floor with other candidates.
“Because the part that I’m not joking about is I believe I could beat every candidate on that poll. Every candidate that they mentioned, from Kamala Harris right on down to Buttigieg and to Tim Walz. I’d beat all of them. I do believe that. I really do.”
