Students reportedly walk out of class when teacher has everyone ‘come out’ as gay; principal doubles down

A “woke” California math teacher is under fire for forcing students to come out as gay or lesbian during a DEI assignment.

Freshmen students at Rancho Buena Vista High School were asked earlier this month to follow the instructions below as part of a diversity, equity, and inclusion assignment:

Stand in a circle. Each of you is now gay or lesbian, and you are about to begin your coming out process. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity.

The assignment instructions subsequently went viral after parent James Leon published a photo of them taken by his daughter to Instagram:

“Very uncomfortable,” Leon later told local station KNSD, describing his and his daughter’s reaction to the instructions. “She told me right away when she got home. She said, ‘Dad, you have to hear this.'”

“She wanted to show me what was going on because she knows I am not for teaching any of that stuff in school,” he added.

His daughter and six other students reportedly walked out of class after their teacher unveiled the assignment.

Leon meanwhile penned an email to the school principal alerting him of what had transpired in the classroom. The reply that he received did not please him.

“I want to thank you for reaching out about your concerns regarding the assignment,” the reply begins. “We understand that sexual education discussions can be sensitive and appreciate your involvement. We talked with our department chair and want to assure you that we provide students with opt-out options, allowing them to work with counselors on an alternative lesson.”

“Mr. Reyes and other teachers who teach this part of the curriculum in the freshman seminar have supported other students who opted out. When your daughter returns to school, she can complete the alternative assignment. I’ve included her AP so they can assist you further if you choose this option,” it continues.

Leon was stunned.

“This is insane,” he subsequently wrote in an Instagram post. “This is grooming, This is sick and twisted. There is not a single curriculum that supports this and many friends of mine who are LGBT are disgusted by this. I demand to know exactly what action is going to be taken against Mr. Reyes.”

“I will be going to the school board meeting as well on Dec 17th. I will also be taking this to the media as well. This should NEVER be taught in public school. Feel free to call me directly or reply directly to this email,” he added.

“I don’t see how this is part of the California curriculum for education,” Leon said during the hearing. “There is nothing that it does other than groom children.”

“I am totally disgusted,” a district bus driver who also spoke at the hearing said. “I am ashamed I work for the district, and you guys allow this to happen in our schools.”

Police were reportedly summoned during the hearing.

“Just after 7 p.m. [that evening], four San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies in two zone cars showed up at the meeting on a ‘preserve the peace call,'” according to KNSD. “NBC 7 asked regular attendees if this had ever happened before, and they said no.”

The district for its part continues to defend the absurd assignment and has even begun accusing critics of spreading so-called “misinformation.”

“Recent social media posts have taken a health lesson on gender expression and identity out of context, spreading misinformation about the district’s curriculum,” a memo released by the district a day after the school board hearing reads. “The class in question addresses social issues, where students develop empathy and understanding across differences.”

“All parents and students were informed of this course’s content before the course started and were allowed to opt out of lessons. The Vista Unified School District is committed to providing an inclusive and equitable education for all students, as required by state and federal law and guided by district board policy. This includes teaching the requirements of the California Healthy Youth Act 2016 and the California Health Education Standards, which address topics such as gender expression while supporting all protected classes,” it continues.
