‘This can’t be real life’: Pelosi claims ‘connection’ to China because of lie she was told as a little girl

Nancy Pelosi can trace the connection she feels with China all the way back to her childhood days spent playing on the beach. Or at least, that’s what she told members of the media who gathered for her press conference at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan.

And that’s where the story went sideways.

When asked if the U.S. – China relationship would be affected by her visit to the Indo-Pacific region, Pelosi launched into an answer that would make Kamala Harris cringe.

“Well, our President – we are the House of Representatives, the Congress of the United States,” she began. “And much of legislation, whether it’s trade or appropriations and the rest, begins in the House of Representatives. And so we are one part of this. Our President has his communication with the President of China, and again, this is – we are two big countries. We have to have communication among us.”

That was enough of a word salad for one response, but in what can only be described as a “Corn Pop Moment,” Pelosi then explained that the connection between herself and China exists because she was told as a little girl that, if she only dug deep enough, she could reach the communist country from the beach.

“When I was a little girl, I was told when at the beach that if I dug a hole deep enough, we would reach China – so we’ve always felt a connection there,” she stated with a straight face.

While it is unknown if Pelosi actually ever reached China from the beach, it is certain that, in telling the story, she buried herself.

Twitter users responded with merciless mocking and a few of their own childhood connections.

Many likened the comment to Tina Fey’s impersonation of Sarah Palin and the infamous “I can see Russia” remark.

And other users wondered if Pelosi was punking us all.

“This can’t be real life,” Tricia Flanagan lamented.

Immediately following the hole-digging story, Pelosi pivoted to the importance of speaking out in support of human rights, stating, “if we do not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out about human rights any place in the world.”

And here’s the kicker to the sandy beach connection: It isn’t the first time Speaker Pelosi has commented on digging a hole to China.

In September 2021, Pelosi told the same tale at Cambridge University.

On that occasion, she evoked the special connection to explain that, despite knowing that China is guilty of genocide against its Uyghur population, the U.S. must continue working with the brutal nation because of climate change.

Yup… That’s one mighty deep hole.
