Celebrating the Chiefs Jan. 7 victory over the San Diego Chargers ended in tragedy for friends David Harrington, 37, Ricky Johnson, 38, and Clayton McGeeney, 36 who were each found dead outside the rental home of Jordan Willis in Platte County, Missouri.
While police have said the case is not being looked at a homicide, loved ones have demanded answers as to Willis’ stated ignorance of his friends’ plight until the cops had arrived two days later.
Speaking with the media, attorney John Picerno had expressed that his client had gone to bed some time after the four stated individuals and an unnamed fifth person had retired to the residence following the Chiefs game.
“Jordan had absolutely nothing to do with their deaths. He does not know the timing or manner of their deaths, nor does he know how or when they exited his house. He had no knowledge that they remained in his back yard, or that they needed medical attention,” a statement from Picerno said.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, a welfare check had been requested by one of the decedent’s fiancée’s prompting the discovery of the bodies before 10 p.m. on Jan. 9. It was at that point that Willis’ attorney said his client learned his friends had died.
“Two people came to his house; however, he did not hear them as he sleeps with earbuds and loud fan. One of those people, the wife of one of the deceased, tried to reach him via Facebook messenger, unfortunately, he did not see the message until after the police contacted him,” stated Picerno.
The Daily Mail noted that the fiancée had also broken into Willis’ home ahead of the arrival of the police in her desperation to learn the whereabouts of her partner and that she was the one to discover the first body before calling 911.
A media statement from KCPD Captain Jake Becchina made clear, “First and foremost, this case 100% not being investigated as a homicide,” and asserted, “there was no obvious signs of foul play observed at or near the crime scene.”
The police captain further added, “There have not been any arrests [or] charges , and no one is in custody. There are no specific threats or concerns for the surrounding community at this time. The resident at the house was cooperative with detectives the day the deceased were discovered.”
Caleb McGeeney, cousin to one of the decedent’s, told Fox 4 of the official account, “It’s got a lot of holes in it, like last time he saw them they were leaving the house, but he didn’t know they had left, that doesn’t make much sense.”
“Somebody has to end up in custody over it regardless of any situation,” he added. “They are at your house and three people are dead.”
“Something is not right,” Johnson’s mother had told NewsNation after saying, “It’s very hard holding up.”
The man’s brother added, “There’s many different things that don’t add up, we just don’t understand how somebody would at least be investigated in any way. We’ve heard that he’s moving out as well, so we don’t know if he’ll even be sticking around much longer.”
“My brother was a smart man, and there’s no way that he would just freeze to death,” he continued. “Freezing to death is not a cause of death that I would accept.”
Becchina indicated it could be weeks before the autopsy report of the three men was concluded.
