Former President Donald Trump declared in a new statement that a lawyer who vehemently insisted he had not lost the 2020 election was actually “never” his attorney.
Days after Sidney Powell pleaded guilty in the Georgia election interference case, Trump took to his social media platform to make the distinction about the woman who famously vowed she was “going to release the Kraken” to prove her claims.
“Sidney Powell was one of millions and millions of people who thought, and in ever increasing numbers still think, correctly, that the 2020 Presidential Election was RIGGED & STOLLEN, AND OUR COUNTRY IS BEING ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED BECAUSE OF IT!” Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social.
Trump was reacting following Powell’s surprise plea deal in the Fulton County case of the 2020 election in which she pled guilty to six misdemeanor counts.
“Prosecutors sentenced Powell to six months probation, a $6,000 fine and $2,700 restitution, and she is also required to submit an apology letter to Georgia residents,” The Hill reported. “Powell, 68, became the second defendant in the Georgia election interference case to plead guilty. Scott Hall, a bail bondsman, pled guilty last month to five counts of the same charge Powell did.”
The former president noted that Powell would have been “conflicted” if she represented him as his lawyer because she served as legal defense of retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn, who was later pardoned by Trump.
“Despite the Fake News reports to the contrary, and without even reaching out to ask the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS. In fact, she would have been conflicted,” Trump declared in his post.
“Ms. Powell did a valiant job of representing a very unfairly treated and governmentally abused General Mike Flynn, but to no avail,” Trump continued. “His prosecution, despite the facts, was ruthless.”
Trump’s critics quickly took to disproving his claim after his post. Progressive watchdog group MeidasTouch soon posted a clip online from 2020 when Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani introduced Powell and others.
“This is representative of our legal team. We’re representing President Trump and we’re representing the Trump campaign. When I finish Sidney Powell and then and then Jenna Ellis will follow me and we will present in brief the evidence that we’ve collected over the last I guess it is two weeks,” Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, said at the time.

A tweet from Trump in November 2020 in which he referenced the “legal effort” and named Powell along with other attorneys was also pulled out off the shelf by critics to prove Trump wrong.
“I look forward to Mayor Giuliani spearheading the legal effort to defend OUR RIGHT to FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS! Rudy Giuliani, Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, a truly great team, added to our other wonderful lawyers and representatives!” the then-president tweeted on his Twitter account which would soon be suspended.

However, days after that tweet, it was reported that the Trump team clarified that Powell was not, in fact, part of the legal team.
“Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity,” Giuliani and attorney Jenna Ellis said in a statement in November 2020.
