Trump eyes suspending federal gas tax in new push to bring prices down

President Donald Trump revealed that he his considering ways to bring down gas prices as pain at the pump becomes a midterm consideration.

Americans are feeling the squeeze of higher gas prices, and affordability is on the ballot this November in what is being considered bad news for Republicans. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said he is “thinking about” suspending the federal gas tax in hopes of bringing prices down.

While this is good news for those who are heavily impacted by fuel costs, the issue is how quickly it could come to fruition. As it stands, the president would need Congress to return before any action could be taken to lift the tax, and lawmakers are not scheduled to return to Washington, D.C., until after the midterm elections.

“The federal gas tax, which finances highway and bridge maintenance, adds 18.4 cents to every gallon of gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel,” the New York Post reported, adding: “The president on Monday signed an executive order allowing truckers to purchase tax-free ‘red dye’ diesel through Dec. 31 — allowing the fuel that’s typically used for tractors and construction equipment to be used more broadly.”

Many states have already taken steps to alleviate the burden by waiving taxes on their own. Ohio’s Governor Mike DeWine (R) signed a bill pausing the state’s 38.5-cent gas tax and 47-cent diesel tax. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R), Indiana Governor Mike Braun (R), and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) have all taken similar actions in their states.

While suspending the federal gas tax would provide national relief, it remains to be seen if Congress will take action before November.
